'Tis the season...for ombré! Bring the trend to your tree with a felted Christmas monogram ornament. Make a letter for each member of your family, or choose one that represents you all. We'll show you how to master felting (it's surprisingly easy) and share our secrets for getting the perfect ombré look. Wool roving comes in so many colors that you are sure to find a color scheme that fits the rest of your Christmas decor. These handmade ornaments also make stunning package toppers. Simply secure them with ribbon or yarn and you'll have the prettiest packages under the tree.
The hardest step is picking which letter to make. After that, it's easy!
Once you decide what letter you want, shape it out of pieces of wool roving. Firm up the letter by using a felting needle until the letter holds its own shape. You can find inexpensive felting needles at your local crafts supply store. Just pull off a small piece of wool roving, and felt it over the letter shape, wrapping and pinning it as you go with the felting needle. Felt additional pieces of wool roving over the entire letter. For the ombré effect, choose different hues of the same color of roving. We used shades of pinks and creams.
Make needle felted balls out of wool roving. Then thread the sewing needle with yarn. Pull the needle and yarn through the felted letter and up through two of the felted balls so that they hang vertically. Allow enough yarn for a loop, then go back down with the needle through the balls and letter. Adjust the yarn to desired hanging length. Knot the yarn on the underside of the letter shape, and cut any excess yarn.
Now your felted monogram ombré ornament is ready to hang! If you're feeling ambitious, make an entire set to spell out a name or holiday word.
