Minoxidil

What retinol is to anti-aging in the skincare world, minoxidil is to hair growth in the haircare world—AKA it’s a top choice among dermatologists for its proven results. The drug was initially developed as a blood pressure medication; when doctors realized that excessive hair growth was a side effect, they started using it as a topical hair loss treatment. While no one is quite sure exactly how it works, the generally agreed upon theory is that it likely has something to do with the fact that it helps stimulate blood flow. The one caveat? You need to keep using it in order to reap the benefits.

Supplements

There are multiple causes of female hair loss, and nutrient deficiency is one of them. Most experts agree that, if this is the cause, oral hair growth supplements can be helpful—though they also note that their efficacy isn’t as well studied as that of other treatments. This being said, if you’re looking for longer, stronger, healthier hair, taking a hair growth supplement can’t hurt (just be sure to check with your doctor first, of course). While the exact vitamins for hair growth found in each supplement vary, biotin, vitamin D, and zinc are common, along with other antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

Hair Loss Systems

These usually consist of a three-step protocol featuring hair growth shampoo, conditioner, and hair loss treatment product. While each specific step may utilize slightly different ingredients and work in a unique way, the benefit of using one of these inclusive systems is that you can feel confident knowing all of the products are formulated and meant to work together; it takes the guesswork out of trying to figure out a product regimen that will help your hair grow.

Scalp Products

Strong, healthy hair can grow only from a strong, healthy scalp. And while you may pay careful attention to the skin on your face, the skin on your head deserves the same type of TLC. Enter a new host of scrubs, masks, and more meant to help detox your scalp. Using one of these to remove excess oil and other buildup creates a healthy environment for more hair follicles to grow—and more hair follicles ultimately equal more hair. Consider using one of these once or twice weekly.
