Experience

As a refugee from Somalia who moved to Seattle at age 7, Hawa Hassan found comfort in cooking traditional foods from Somalia. She’s turned her passion for Somalian food and culture into a business. She is the founder of Basbaas Foods, which carries a line of sauces inspired by Somali foods.

She also wrote the cookbook In Bibi’s Kitchen, which features recipes and stories from several grandmothers from African countries on the Indian Ocean. On her digital show on Food Network, Hawa at Home, she cooks meals from her cookbook.

In addition to being an entrepreneur, show host, and cookbook author, Hawa also contributes to a number of publications and websites. She is passionate about sharing her love of authentic Somalian foods.
