There's a new plant disease in this country called downy mildew and it could be devastating to impatiens. Right now, it's in parts of the eastern US and nobody knows for sure how far it's going to spread. If it's already in your area, chances are you've heard about it. But don't despair. There are other plants you can grow and shade your areas where impatiens thrive. Impatiens' cousin, New Guinea impatiens, is a great option. Plants cost more, but you can plant them farther apart and they'll fill in. That way, the cost to plant to bed isn't much more than standard impatiens.
