How to Grow Your Own Superfoods
Superfoods don’t have to be exotic -- or expensive. Our list of top superfoods, including green superfoods, are perfect for growing in your own backyard, allowing you to save money on groceries and know exactly where your food comes from.
You hear a lot about superfoods. Those fruits and vegetables that are bursting with nutrition. Instead of buying them at the grocery store, why not grow fresh ones right in your own garden? And you don't even need a green thumb to do it. Kale is incredibly high in vitamins A, C and K. And it's one of the easiest plants to grow, especially in Spring and Fall, because it tolerates frosty weather. Another perk, is that it's a very ornamental plant and will look right at home in your flower beds or containers. Upright varieties, such as this red bore, are striking specimens. But the La Rosette types are beautiful too. Especially in containers and as edging. Blueberries are another super food with ornamental qualities. Known as one of the best sources of antioxidants, new blueberry varieties like peach sorbet and jelly bean grow well in average garden conditions. And with great fall color, they continue to bring seasonal interest to your garden. Kiwis are a delicious fruit produced on a large vine. Gardeners in nearly any climate can find a variety that will be hardy. Train them up a trellis, and enjoy their beauty as well as their great taste. Goji berry, also known as wolf berry, is a little more exotic, and packed with vitamins, protein, and antioxidants. These woody plants are hardy, vigorous, and produce loads of pretty orange berries. Eat them straight off the plant, or let them dry for a week or two on your kitchen sink and they'll turn into Goji Raisins. Goji berries are easy to grow, but aren't very attractive. So consider planting them in a back corner. By growing your own super foods, you can really enjoy the fruits of your labor. [MUSIC]
