The torta, a south-of-the-border cousin to the American sandwich, is popping up everywhere. Wifh fillings like refried beans and guacamole, they're pure Mexico on a bun!

I'd like to introduce you to the south of the border cousin of the American sandwich- la torta. It gets a Mexican spin from braised meats, Mexican cheeses and of course, chilies. There're a hundreds of variations. Some-- like pambazos and tortas ahogadas [unk] chili to pump up the volume. Typically, you'll find tortas for sale in Mexican restaurants or taco trucks, but you can also make your own. Use one of our recipes or wing it with your favorite Mexican ingredients. On one side of the buns, spread refried beans on the other guacamole, and in between your shredded lettuce, red onion, queso fresco, and shredded beef, pork or chicken. To finish the torta, just top with your favorite hot sauce. The results are pure Mexico on a bun and as I say in Mexico, "buen provecho". The great thing about Mexican sandwiches is that they take all those great flavors from traditional Mexican foods and put them between 2 pieces of bread. They're a great alternative for tacos or burritos.
