This “Decorating Lessons” video shows how we made over a frumpy fireplace in three easy steps. Check out this mantel’s metamorphosis!
In many homes, a fireplace is the architectural crown to a living space, but it can also be the one element holding a room back from all that can be style-wise. I'm Lacey Howard, editor of Decorating Magazine and today, I'm gonna show you a fabulous fireplace makeover. This home's fireplace is definitely reflective; it's a 1980's era construction, with a dark bricks around stained with mantel piece and brass and glass doors. The home owners were hesitant to use the wood burner because it required so much work to run and maintain and it lacked energy efficiency. This fireplace is definitely in need of a new look and a new user-friendly outlook. First, the shelf was removed and the brick brackets that held it up were knocked off. A wood frame inspired by the room's original raised panel wainscoting was built around the fireplace and heart. The design mimics the paneling so closely that the new mantel and fireplace facing look as though they are original to the space. White paint updated the fireplace and gave it a more commanding presence. This fireplace facelift is complete with the addition of pretty pattern tile and a new glass-front gas burning insert. Instead of covering the original brick with paint, we opted for tiles. To lay the tile over the brick, we covered the surface with a coat of mastic or skim coat to even out the surface and ready it for the tile. Then, we tiled the surface following manufacturer directions. To compliment the new surrounding hearts-updated look, the new insert features black and brass nickel finishes. The addition offers cleanliness, updated efficiency, and ease of use. It clicks on with the remote control for instant ambience. Don't let a dated mantel or a fireplace hold back your decor. Get creative. Makeover your room's focal point and boost your style quotient. For Decorating Magazine, I'm Lacey Howard.
