Planning Advice from a Pro
Remodeling and planning tips from an officer of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).
-Hi! My name is Bill Carter, owner of the William Carter Company. I'm a remodelling contractor in Sacramento, California and an officer of the National Association of The Remodelling Industry or NARI. If you're planning a remodelling project, here are a few things to think about to help you get started. Think your remodelling project through from the start to finish. Careful planning will let you upgrade your home, increase its value, and customize your living space all for less than the cost of moving into a new home. Look your house over. What repairs are needed? What would you like to improve? Your remodelling contractor can help you with your planning by discussing your options and what kind of improvement you can make within your budget. Think about designing function. How do you want the traffic to flow? Where do you want electrical outlets, internet connections, telephone jacks, and cable hookups? What kind of lighting do you need? Always plan for enough storage space, closets, pantries, counter space, laundry rooms by the bedrooms, mudrooms, and even outdoor living room. If you haven't found a contractor yet, finding the professional remodelling contractor doesn't have to be difficult. Search the website of a professional association to find contractors in your area. If you solicit bids from multiple contractors, be sure they are bidding on the same scope and quality of work. Discuss the variations in bids and beware of any bid that is substantially lower than the others. If your state requires licensing, ask if the company is licensed and check with your local Consumer Affairs Office to be sure there are no unresolved complaints on record. Ask to see a copy of the contractor's certificate of insurance or for the name of his/her insurance agency to verify coverage. Most states require a contractor to carry worker's compensation, property damage, and personal liability insurance. NARI's goal is to help homeowners find the right professional partner to do the remodelling. We want you to get the maximum value of enjoyment for the dollars you invest in your remodelling. Enjoy your remodelled home.
