Making Pie Dough
Making your own piecrust may sound intimidating, but it's really not. Here's how to make tender, flaky piecrust by hand. (You'll be so proud!).
To make a pie dough, start by stirring together the flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the fat such as shortening. Use a pastry blender or 2 knives to cut the shortening into the dry mixture until the pieces are the size of small peas. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of cold water over part of the flour mixture and gently toss with a fork. Push the moistened dough to the side of the bowl. Repeat moistening the dough using 1 tablespoon of water at a time until all the dough is just moistened. Next, shake the dough into a ball. Pat the ball into a dish shape and store in plastic wrap or airtight container. Pie dough can be refrigerated up to 3 days and frozen up to 6 months.
