What goes underneath a floor is as important as the finish material. Ceramic and stone may require additional subfloor support. Vinyl and carpeting may tolerate truss systems with larger joist spacing. Wood and laminate floors work well on a plywood or OSB subfloor installed over wood joists or a slab foundation.
