How to Thaw a Frozen Turkey
- Always thaw in the refrigerator -- never at room temperature.
- How long something takes to thaw depends on its size and density. A 20-pound turkey may take three days.
- If you wake up on the morning of your big meal and the turkey is still slightly frozen, put it in a leak-proof plastic bag in the sink and immerse it in cold water. Change the water every half hour, turning the bag occasionally.
- Cook the turkey immediately after thawing.

a78lauramae: according to Butterball a thawed turkey is good for 4 days. are you sure it was completely thawed a week ago?

11/25/2009 01:18:40 PM Report AbuseFirst time mom and second time thanksgiving cook- we were given a 20bls turkey and I'm hoping I can thaw it in time for tomorrow.
11/25/2009 01:16:21 PM Report AbuseOur big-bird (23 lbs.) is still frozen, sitting in the frig since Saturday. It is Tuesday evening...and big bird is just now revealing a softer touch, but barely. If big-bird doesn't thaw by tomorrow (late afternoon)... can I do put him in the sink like a sitting duck, changing out the cold water every 30 minutes, and then put him in the refrigerator until he goes in the oven at 7am? Or does he really, really, have to be cooked immediately after thawing?
11/24/2009 11:36:24 PM Report AbuseIt say 3 day but mine has been in the frig for 4 days & is still partly frozen...it's only a 19.9 lbs turkey
