Internet Resources

There are several Web sites that can help you regain your financial footing. Here are some of the best.

National Foundation for Credit Counseling

This national nonprofit network provides assistance to people in stressful financial situations. It has 1,500 consumer credit counseling service offices nationwide and offers counseling by phone, Internet, mail or in person. 800-388-2227.

The Motley Fool

This Web site features plenty of financial self-help information, including a step-by-step "Getting Out of Debt" tutorial. The "Consumer Credit/Credit Card" discussion board is hopping, and a great place to chat with others in the same boat. The advice you get should, of course, be thoroughly checked.

Cardweb.com

Operated by a credit card research firm, this Web site has a consumer corner with competitive card rates and information on the industry. Biggest help: a listing of FAQs on your legal rights when in debt. (Click on "CardLearn" under "Consumer Channels.")

Quicken.com

Run by Intuit, Quicken.com offers loads of financial tools, including one that helps you come up with a personalized plan for getting out of debt by entering your current debt amounts and income.
