Wayside Gardens Ashe Magnolia

This Bigleaf Magnolia rivals the lush beauty of any tropical cultivar with its oversized leaves and enormous blooms! The leaves and blooms are the largest of any simple-leafed North American tree: so large, in fact, that they put all other ...magnolias to shame! The gigantic proportions make this endangered species feels like a holdout of some ancient, primordial time. What a conversation starter! Magnolia needs well drained soil, preferably on the acidic side. Pruning is not necessary, but if you wish to prune, the best times are late summer or late winter. This Southern native is untroubled by hot weather, but can be harmed by frost-if you get frost advisories late in the spring, try to cover up your Magnolia buds so they dont freeze. Wind can also be a problem for the big, lush leaves, so plant your Ashe Magnolia in a sheltered location like the understory of a mature tree. read more
