Tasting Panel rating: 95. red-purple 2012 has strong cherry liquor and blackberry aromas followed by terroir notes of graphite and... pencil shavings. A fruit-forward wine, first attack is black cherry with cassis, but then moves into notes of cigar box and sandalwood oak on nose. tannins frame generous fruit nicely, yet are ripe and balanced. finish of cherries and dusty Cabernet is lingering. This wine will improve over next seven to 10 years, but also enjoyable now with one to two hours of prior decanting. read more

As someone at the winery put it, Gravel Bed Red is a delicious confluence of geolo- gy and hedonism. I prefer to think of it as ri...ch, lush and juicy! The Cabernet imparts blackberry, cassis and cedar to the nose and structure and weight to the palate. The Merlot adds black cherry and dried herbs. The Zinfandel brings spice and baked berry pie to the party. The oak is subtle, the alcohol is restrained and the tannins are soft. For a wine created for current consumption, it is a surprisingly deep and complex. read more
