Is there any more beautiful, magnificently fragrant white Lily than Casa Blanca, the classic Easter Lily? If so, we cant imagine h...ow it could improve on the clean lines, pure white color, and sweet aroma of this long-time favorite! Fully 10 inches across, these wide-open blooms are beautifully set with handsome auburn anthers and fresh-green throats. Up to 8 blooms open on each stem. The effect is one of dazzling clean color -- and each bloom lasts a week or more! Casa Blanca is borne on strong stems (great for cutting!) from mid- to late summer. Plants reach 4 to 5 feet tall with fresh green foliage that sets off the blooms nicely. They multiply eagerly to form spectacular colonies over time. Wonderful interplanted (and in mixed arrangements) with its pastel-pink sister, Casa Rosa. Plant in full sun to partial shade in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Zones 5-9. read more

This plant looks so exotic, with its combination of big, creamy-edged leaves and exquisite spotted pink blooms, that nobody need k...now its a cinch to grow! Gilt Edge is a shade- and moisture-loving Toad Lily, ready to flower for weeks during the dull late-summer-early-fall season when the garden is at one of those awkward in between stages! Gilt Edge is showier than most Formosa Toad Lilies, with long, elegant leaves the size of dollar bills, jaggedly edged in a creamy yellow that varies leaf by leaf. Vigorous and attractive all season, it doesnt brown out toward the end of summer, as some Toad Lilies will, but stays as fresh and clean as though the leaves were newly unfurled! The blooms may remind you of Orchids; just an inch across, they stand out brilliantly, their deep pink petals merrily spotted in deep purple. Expect them to keep coming for several weeks, offering a terrific color show in the garden. Plant Gilt Edge in the shade garden, giving it more sun in the north than in the south. It will colonize readily if you allow it room, so clear a wide area and get ready to watch this Toad Lily make itself at home! A good companion to ferns and Hostas, it reaches 20 to 24 inches tall and up to 30 inches wide in evenly moist (not boggy or wet) soil. If youre planting more than one, space them about 2 feet apart to give them room to spread! Hardy in zones 4-8. read more

Hummingbirds thrill to the flowers of Herons Pirouette -- and so will you, for this is a scene-stealer in any setting. Introduced by Dan Hinkley from wild seed collected in Japan, it drops seed and bulbils of its own in autumn, gradually creating a large and lovely planting in moist, enriched soil. Herons Pirouette reaches 15 to 18 inches high and 18 to 24 inches wide. Destined to be the showpiece of your shade garden, it is an absolute must-have. This rare African native is sure to make your garden stand out, with its strap-like foliage and long, graceful flower stalks crown...ed in pristine white flowers. The showy blooms come on in summer, adding a stunning accent to the garden, container, or cutflower arrangement. A great choice for a larger planter, White Superior actually flowers better when its roots are contained. Another benefit of growing this gorgeous Lily-of-the-Nile in a container is that you can bring it indoors for the winter, protecting it from the icy chill of winter. This African Lily is originally a native of South Africa and Madagascar, which unfortunately means that it is tender to the ravages of winter. Through cultivation in England, African Lily(or Blue Lily) went from a completely tender evergreen to a deciduous outdoor plant. White Superior can overwinter outdoors in zones 7 to 9, but still appreciates a nice blanket of mulch in the winter. This bit of necessary winter maintenance will be well rewarded in the summer! In July the dark green, strap-shaped foliage boasts large umbels of sparkling white funnel-shaped flowers. This variety of Agapanthus praecox blooms starting in July and finishing around September--a particularly long bloom time for Lily-of-the-Nile. The flowers also last quite a while in the vase with water. This Agapanthus grows up to 2 feet tall and wide (3 feet tall when in bloom). This Genus was named by the ancient Greeks; its name comes from the words agape (unconditional love) and anthos (flower). And when you see the exotic, delicate beauty of these flowers, you will understand why! Plant White Superior in part- to full-sun in well-drained soil. This exotic plant actually tolerates drought and a broad variety of soils (acid to alkaline, sandy, and even clay soils), so long as the soil is very well-drained and not too cold. This African Blue Lily is originally a native of South Africa and Madagascar, which unfortunately means that it is tender to the ravages of winter. The brightest red Calla of all, Red Alert is a real show off, blooming brightly throughout midsummer in the shady garden and dazzl...ing in the window indoors. The flowers are lovely for cutting, but they add so much sizzle to the shade that you might be tempted to leave them on the plant and enjoy their outdoor impact instead! The color is a true scarlet infused with red, dazzling with all the neon boldness of which Mother Nature is capable. The flowers (actually spathes) arise in good numbers on plants just 20 to 24 inches high. The blooms are banked by handsome dark green foliage that is spotted with cream. Cut a few leaves while youre gathering blooms for the vase--the winsome foliage is colorful, and makes terrific filler and background color! Calla Lilies are moisture lovers, and dont mind wet feet. This makes Red Alert a good choice for the waterside planting or bog garden as well as containers and the shade garden. A fine houseplant, it blooms outdoors in midsummer and is fantastic as a cut-flower. Even the foliage is attractive! Dont miss the chance to liven up any area with the fresh red blooms of this Calla. Broken Heart might sound like an over-dramatic name, but this is one very dramatic flower! The blushing pink petals are speckled a...nd streaked with blood-red accents, and the center is ringed in red-tipped petals. These lush blooms are at least double, usually boasting three or even four layers of petals on a large, beautiful face. And this wonderfully-floriferous Lily grows up to 10 of these impressive flowers from each bulb! This double oriental lily makes a fine specimen or container plant, and will be a standout in any bed or the middle of a border. And of course the beautiful lily blooms are excellent cuts! This variety is particularly fragrant--just a bloom or two will fill the room with a light, airy scent. The dark green foliage will reach 36 to 40 inches tall, and the flower buds open around June, putting on their romantic color show until late July or early August. And these blooms only grow more magnificent over time: after a couple of years in the garden, the mature blooms come on an astounding 8 inches wide! The colorful, fragrant blooms arent just alluring to people--Hummingbirds and butterflies love to visit these Lilies, as well! Plant Broken Heart in average, well-drained soil (acidic is better than alkaline). Loamy or normal soil is fine. This Lily does particularly well in the middle or back of a border, where shorter plants can shade its feet, while its face still reaches the sun. Plant the bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep and space them 9 to 12 inches apart, 3 or 4 bulbs per square foot will fill out an area nicely, or you could plant in drifts and let this vigorous lily naturalize season after season. The perfect companion to solid white lilies -- not to mention every rose in the garden! -- Dizzy is a charming Oriental Lily with ...ultra-sweet, distinctive fragrance and boldly patterned blooms of pale pink and dark red. Long-lasting and easy to grow, its a must for the cutting garden, and also looks spectacular in the rear of the border, perfuming the entire summer garden with its huge 10-inch blooms! Dizzy sets up to 7 blooms the first year from every bulb, and like most garden lilies, increases in height, width, and bud count with each passing year. These are magnificent flowers, opening from long, elegant buds in mid and late summer and remaining fresh for several weeks. The base color is white to shell-pink, overlaid with darker pink blushes near the wide central stripe of brilliant rosy-red. Dark red freckles complete the color pattern. And each petal is long, slender, and widely spaced, with deeply ruffled edges for an effect of greater depth. Dizzy holds its blooms open wide, for maximum showiness. Some of the petals recurve gently. Youll adore this lily! Dizzy is very easy to grow, too. Just set the bulb into enriched garden soil and give it support as it grows. The first year it may achieve just 2˝ to 3˝ feet, but will still set 5 to 7 buds. Next year it will be a bit taller, the blooms may be a bit larger, and so on. You just cant go wrong! Space plants 12 inches apart, and if growing for cut-flowers, pick the blooms early in the day, just as they are opening. Foolproof color and scent, indoors and out! Zones 4-9. Pack of 3 bulbs. read more
