Alcea Perennial Singles - Hollyhock
White Flower Farm
$29.95
at White-Flower-Farm-Spring-2017

This mixture of large-flowered hybrids replaces the Singles strain we offered for many years because the hybrids are substantially... more perennial. They owe their durability to one of their parents, A. ficifolia, a long-lived Siberian species with Fig-like foliage. In all other respects, these are the traditional Hollyhocks, whose towering spikes of huge (4–5″) blooms are one of summer's greatest pleasures. Colors run from white to pale yellow to pink and burgundy, and plants reach heights of 6–8′. Hollyhocks will never outlive Peonies, but the plants from this Perennial Mixture carry on long after their biennial cousins are gone. Use multiple plants for a full range of color. The common Hollyhock is one of the most desirable garden plants nature ever invented. Alcea should be planted in full sun and, if placed in a protected location, might not need to be staked. Flowering begins in June here and continues into August. Rust, a fungus that appears as orange-brown spotting on the leaves, can sometimes be a problem, but seems to have little effect on the vigor of the plant. This can be avoided or diminished by providing ample air circulation around the plants. If necessary, treat with applications of Neem Oil or sulfur starting early in the season. For more information on growing Alcea, click Growing Guide.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,7S,7W,8,8W,9,9W,10,10W Blooms In:August July June Spacing:18-24" Height:6-8' Ships as:1 PINT 28.86 CU IN. read more

Bare root. There isn't a more rewarding garden flower than the herbaceous Peony, and a garden without these plants is a sorry thing indeed. Peony flowers range from exquisitely delicate singles to large and lush doubles, and come in shades ranging from pure white to the deepest, darkest red.Peonies produce their extravagant display in early June every year, regardless of weather, because they are among the most durable and longest-lived plants. Sisyrinchium Angustifolium Lucerne - Blue-Eyed Grass

$13.95
at White-Flower-Farm-Spring-2017

There are as many as 90 species in this genus of Grass-like plants from the Western Hemisphere, but only Sisyrinchium angustifoliu...m is hardy for us. It's a carefree native, but we've never paid much attention to it because, frankly, it's not very showy. And then along came this selection, which we found at a nursery in Switzerland. It forms a clump of narrow, blue-green leaves 12″ tall and wide that looks for all the world like an ornamental Grass. Then, over a long period that begins in May and runs into July, it blankets itself with starry, lavender-blue flowers that are much larger than those of the species, fully 1″ across. It makes a superb edging, especially along a walk or a terrace. Plants flower best in full sun but also put on a good show in partial shade, and though the species is found in moist locations, they're not the least picky about soil. Thanks to this variety, Blue-eyed Grass finally moves from the wild to a prominent place in the garden. A White Flower Farm introduction. Large, fragrant, semidouble to double blossoms in a captivating shade of violet pink arrive in profusion on this Intersectional Pe...ony. The color intensifies toward the base of each flower, beautifully framing the golden centers. These plants form a compact and tidy mound of foliage, and are perfect for smaller gardens or the middle of a border.Hybrids between Tree Peonies and herbaceous Peonies, known as Intersectional or Itoh Peonies, are superb, long-lived plants with the large, exotic blooms and refined foliage of Tree Peonies, but with stems that die back to the ground in fall like herbaceous Peonies. Making crosses between these two groups was a horticultural feat that proved remarkably difficult to accomplish. The quest for this elusive marvel began in Japan in the late 1940s with Mr. Toichi Itoh, and was picked up by American breeders. Don Hollingsworth introduced 'Garden Treasure' and 'Border Charm' in 1984. Rodger Anderson, an amateur breeder in Wisconsin, spent 12 patient years carrying out crosses, finally hitting the jackpot with yellow 'Bartzella', registered in 1986. Since then, other beautiful colors have been developed, but only a few have made it into commerce.Hardiness Zone:4,5,6,7,8,8S,8W Blooms In:June May Spacing:30-36" Height:22-24" Ships as:BAREROOT read more

You simply can’t lose with the delightful pale blue standards and deep blue falls of this Iris. Highly floriferous, this award win...ner produces several stems topped with large flowers in June, and again in late summer. Reblooming varieties have been bred to produce bloom stalks more than once a year, first in spring and then again in late summer or fall. Although they have a tendency to rebloom, they are not guaranteed to bloom a second time. Repeat bloom is dependent on many things, including geographic location and growing conditions. But it’s definitely worth trying these varieties for a chance at a second round of stunning blooms. Iris is a large genus with upwards of 200 species, which range from inconspicuous wildlings to the extravagant Tall Bearded Iris. Plenty of sun and well-drained soil with a pH near neutral are the primary requirements for their success. For spring-shipped potted Iris, plant the rhizome at the same soil level as in the pot. The top of the rhizome should be exposed, or just below the surface in hot summer climates. For fall-shipped bareroot Iris, plant the rhizome horizontally with the top exposed, or just below the surface of the soil in hotter climates. Bearded Iris are best planted in the fall because they go dormant in June and are harvested in August. Possibly the most important color break in Siberian Iris breeding. This Currier McEwen cross offers falls of bright butter yellow ...between neat white standards. The large, shapely flowers are carried on 28″ stems, and in our gardens we find that the colors blend superbly with every other Siberian Iris. 'Butter and Sugar' is an easy choice. Siberian Irises combine easy care with grace and beauty. Group them together or scatter them throughout a perennial border or foundation planting. Their flowers rise above sturdy stems and slender leaves, and feature intricate, arching standards and ruffled falls. They make stunning cut flowers. Iris breeders are dramatically changing the range of colors, heights, and bloom times available in this group. Siberian Iris often begin to flower in late May, but the peak of bloom here is in the first half of June. Their thick roots drive down deeply, which makes them drought resistant (though they also thrive in damp soil) and great plants for holding steep banks in place. Each clump becomes huge, and when a group of them grows together, weeds can't grow in between. After bloom, the grassy leaves stand erect and green through the growing season. Siberian Iris struggle in the desert Southwest. Irises are among the best known and best loved of garden plants. This huge genus contains upward of 200 species, which range from timid and inconspicuous wildlings to the splendid and extravagant Tall Bearded Iris. The sweetly scented flowers are white and creamy yellow with flecks of deep violet around the edges. No two are exactly alike, but... every one is irresistible. 'Rebecca' belongs to a group called Violettas, which offer a compact habit, a strong vanilla perfume, and flowers without lines at the base of the petals. They also like to bloom heavily all summer, and you can count on 'Rebecca' to delight your eyes and nose from spring till hard frost. Viola is a valuable genus composed of more than 400 species of perennials from the world's temperate regions. There has been much hybridizing among species, resulting in many gradations of flower form and hardiness. The varieties offered here are reliably perennial for us. They prosper in full sun or partial shade (partial shade is always best in the South and the warmest reaches of Zones 9 and 10 in the West). Violas want even moisture and will tolerate quite damp soil. at White-Flower-Farm-Spring-2017

'Stella de Oro' begins its display of golden yellow flowers in mid-June and keeps flowering at a steady pace until fall if the spe...nt blooms are removed. This means it throws lots of 24″ flower scapes practically all summer, making it the all-time blooming champion among Daylilies. Use it in borders or in containers on a patio or deck, or make a Daylily border just of 'Stella.' For sheer volume of blooms, she can't be beat. Winner of the Stout Silver Medal from American Hemerocallis Society in 1985. Daylilies (properly, Hemerocallis) are the plants every gardener dreams of. They offer glorious flowers in every shade except blue, a long season of bloom (though individual flowers last but a day), and a robust disposition that makes them easy to transplant, easy to maintain, quick to multiply, and resistant to pests. They make a carefree and colorful ground cover. We ship large, field-grown plants that usually bloom the first year. They will outperform lesser grades offered elsewhere. Except as noted, all are dormant varieties, meaning they are deciduous.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,8,8S,8W,9,9W Blooms In:August July June September Spacing:15-18" Height:24" Ships as:BAREROOT read more
