Not only were hammocks used for sleeping, but they were also used for transporting goods. The people of northeastern Brazil still prefer to sleep in hammocks, whereas throughout the country they served a decorative function that offers enviable relaxation. Therefore, a hammock must be woven with special care; its elaboration includes various steps and the conjoint work of several artisans. The hammock's main body is woven on a loom, traditional or mechanical, and then it is distributed among groups of women to finish. Some may use pedal looms known as mucamba, whereas others may finish the hammock with crocheted details, all made by hand. read more

I am the youngest of six children and have worked since I was in elementary school. Whenever I earned money, I shared it with my siblings. After graduating from high school, I moved to Denpasar and worked in a shop for about ten years. People say I'm a kind and honest woman. I'm married and have three children. Having children has not made my situation worse like I used to think. With the children on our side, we can always solve problems, as I think God protects them. My husband helps me with my work. Before we started, we lived under very difficult conditions. After a bomb exploded in Bali, no tourists visited the island and, around the same time, I was fired from my job. I was pregnant and sick, but God's mercy saved me from the difficult condition. My brother taught me this craft, which he has done since 1995. When I first started, we received a big order for our wooden décor designs. I realized that no matter how difficult the situation is, we could solve it if we combat laziness and live simply. read more

About this item: Maya Artists of the Yucatan hand-weave glistening bronze hues into a handsome hammock. Long before the Spanish arrived upon the coasts of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Maya preferred to sleep and rest in hammocks. They considered the hammock to be like the loving embrace of a mother, due to the comfortable manner in which the body is held and swung within its cradle. Maya Artists of the Yucatan seek to preserve time-honored customs while also offering stylized versions of the original Maya hammock. For them, the hammock is a work of art. Their hammocks are incredibly comfortable, easy to maintain, and may be stored just about anywhere. It easily packs for travel to the beach or lake. Extender ropes (measuring 1 meter), hammock hooks ("S" hooks), and step-by-step instructions included for easy installation. This hammock will hug the body because it does not have spreader bars. It is made from a single layer of woven nylon. Store in a dry place. If a stand is desired, we recommend on around 10ft in size.
