From the folks who introduced compact Blueberry bushes comes this double-fruiting variety. Perpetua is so-named because it flowers... and fruits in midsummer and then again in the fall. The small berries are sweet and delicious, and the plant’s glossy dark green foliage turns yellow and red in autumn. These vigorous plants grow 4–5' tall, and will keep you harvesting over a long season. Although plants are self-pollinating, they tend to produce better harvests when grown with a different Blueberry variety to help with cross-pollination. PP 24,209Formerly known as BrazelBerries, Bushel and Berry self-pollinating varieties fare as well in containers as in the ground. The berries are anything but dwarf, and once the plants are established, they will fruit reliably for years. Growing Bushel and Berry in containers: Bushel and Berry bushes are dwarf plants that produce full-size fruit. They will produce some fruit in the first couple of years, but really hit their stride in the third year and beyond. Upon arrival, replant in a 12-16" container using a peat-based potting soil mix with pine bark. Place the container outdoors in full sun for the growing season. As your plant matures, you will likely need to put it in a 20-24" diameter container. Your plant will start producing more fruit in the second year. Fertilizing. Bushel and Berry Blueberries thrive in acid soil (pH of 4.5-5.5). Fertilize your plants with a slow-release fertilizer designed for acid-loving plants in spring and again in midsummer. Pruning. In spring, prune out any dead branches. After harvest, prune out fruit-bearingbranches, leaving new branches to fruit the following season. Wintering over. In colder climates (Zone 5), you can overwinter plants in their containers by storing them in a sheltered, unheated area such as a garage or shed once the leaves drop in fall. Be certain the soil is moist when the plant is brought under cover, and water very sparingly during the winter. Once every 6 weeks is generally sufficient. The intent is for the plant to go as dormant as possible. In spring, bring them outside when temperatures remain above 25° and place in full sun. In warmer climates where freeze-thaw cycles occur, store plants on a protected porch. Where freezing is not a concern, plants can remain outdoors in containers and enjoyed year round. Growing Bushel and Berry Blueberries in the ground:Choose a planting location in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun each day) with soil that is moisture-retentive yet well drained. Because Blueberries grow best in soil that has an acid pH and is rich in humus, you should replace about half of the soil dug from the planting hole with at least as much peat moss. Mix the peat moss thoroughly into the remaining soil, and then dig a hole that will generously accommodate the plant's root ball. Gently remove the plant from its pot and place into the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Then push soil back into the hole around the plant and press firmly with your hands to eliminate air pockets and establish good soil contact. A gentle but thorough watering will further settle the soil around the plant.Blueberries require about 1″ of rain or irrigation per week. Surrounding your plants with a 4–5′ circle of mulch helps keep the soil moist and prevents the growth of weeds. Apply a 2–4″ layer of wood chips, shredded bark, or other organic material. The year after planting (and every year thereafter) apply a fertilizer designed for acid-loving plants at flowering time in spring and again about 4 weeks later.Hardiness Zone:4-8S/W Blooms In:May Spacing:24-30" Height:4-5' Ships as:ONE GALLON POT read more

The Beautiful Plumes of SummerProfessional Landscapers' Answer for Summer-Long Beauty in Difficult Planting Locations When profess...ional landscapers create a plan for an elegant garden, they almost always reserve a spot for a special planting of astilbes. Few plants provide so much beauty and colour for such an extended period…and with so little care.Perfect for Shade These attractive, mound-shaped perennials with fernlike foliage produce dozens of soft, feathery, plumelike flowers on 20-36" stems. Astilbes grow well anywhere, but are particularly fond of shady spots where dramatic colour is often lacking. They're not fussy about soil and do especially well at watersides. Astilbes are attractive when planted in drifts or when used in combination with other perennials. Even a single specimen is effective since the foliage, blooms and shape of each plant can be appreciated from all sides. They offer a long blooming period during late spring and early summer, filling the garden with feathery spires for many weeks. Even when not in bloom, their dark green, high-gloss leaves are attractive all by themselves or as summer bouquet greenery. Now, you can enjoy a complete collection of the four most outstanding astilbe varieties at an extremely attractive price. Breck's ® has assembled a collection of prime-quality astilbes—each fully guaranteed to grow and bloom beautifully in your garden this spring and summer—and to bring continuing beauty for many years to come. An Amazing Offer on Beautiful Low-Maintenance AstilbesWhen astilbes were introduced into Europe from the Orient in the mid-nineteenth century, their beautiful flowering plumes reminded palace gardeners of popular spring-blooming spirea shrubs. Still to this day, in both Europe and America, they are often called Garden or Florists' Spirea. But with so many distinctive qualities, they deserve recognition by their own name.Easy to GrowIn Holland, astilbes have long been the mainstay of summer perennial gardens. They're so easy to grow and require so little attention, you'll even find them blooming brightly along roads and canals. Planted en masse, they're a special delight. While you'll find them blooming in sunny spots, they are most often chosen for their unique ability to grow with vigour and bloom profusely in shade or semi-shade. All they ask for is plenty of moisture to keep their roots thriving. While the 20-36" flowering stems bloom with colourful charm for several weeks in late spring and early summer, their beauty doesn't end when the colour fades. The dried plumes turn an elegant amber-tan and continue to provide garden charm all through the summer and into the fall. Meanwhile, the high-gloss, dark green foliage, which grows in foot-high mounds, provides an extremely attractive ground cover. There are many varieties of astilbe, but the finest of all for American gardens are the four varieties specially selected for Breck's ® Deluxe Astilbe Collection. This collection includes 2 each of the following varieties: Lavender: Gorgeous feathery plumes in lovely lavender are a rare sight to see! Mounds of lush foliage sets the stage for an amazing pop of colour that draws in the eye. The cool hue completes the look of an astilbe garden, and adds a unique element to any flower bed. Red Fanal: An absolute must for any astilbe planting. Scarlet plumes will truly stand out in your flower garden with its deep rich colour.
