Here are 3 Peonies whose beauty is matched by their perfume. Not all Peonies are fragrant, but these have heady scents that will c...atch your attention across the border or across the room. 'Festiva Maxima' is a classic, with big, blowsy blooms that are white with crimson flecks, and a powerful scent. 'Eden’s Perfume' produces delightfully fragrant, double, bright pink flowers up to 7″ across. 'Raspberry Sundae' has cream petals suffused with a raspberry shade, and a sweet perfume. All 3 varieties are low maintenance, high performance plants. One of each, bareroot, labeled. There isn't a more rewarding garden flower than the herbaceous Peony, and a garden without these plants is a sorry thing indeed. The flowers range from exquisitely delicate singles to large and lush doubles and come in shades ranging from pure white to the deepest, darkest red. This extravagant display is produced in early June, regardless of weather. Peonies have no natural enemies, no exacting cultural requirements beyond full sun and neutral to slightly sweet soil, and they shrug off cold. After bloom is complete, you are left with a handsome mound of glossy, deep green foliage that will happily anchor the next sequence of bloom in the neighborhood. Finally, Peonies make superior cut flowers, lasting more than a week if cut in full bud. We ship large roots with 3–5 eyes that are fresh from the growing fields. While a newly planted Peony seldom makes a first-class show in its first season, these vigorous plants will reach the top of their form in their second or third year. Southern gardeners should seek out our early bloomers and provide afternoon shade. Perfectly round, 6″ spheres of rich purple florets keep the garden drama going after 'Globemaster' is finished and before Allium g...iganteum comes on the scene. Blooms are well supported on tall sturdy stems and provide a strong vertical flourish for borders, wonderful with Peonies and late Tulips. The genus Allium (the Latin means "garlic") offers colorful, distinctive, and long-lasting forms that are standouts in the early summer garden. Alliums are sun-lovers and prefer well-drained, even sandy, soil. Deer, mice, chipmunks, and related predators generally avoid this group, so you can plant with impunity. Tuck them among clumps of summer-flowering perennials where the Alliums' withering foliage will be hidden by the expanding perennials. We have rarely been more excited about a plant than we are about this hybrid Peony.  'Bartzella' is a cross between a herbaceous a...nd a Tree Peony (known as Intersectional or Itoh Peonies), a horticultural feat that has proved remarkably difficult to accomplish. The result is a stunningly beautiful variety whose deep sulphur yellow flowers, each with red flames at the center, are carried on a plant that looks and behaves like a very big, healthy herbaceous Peony.  'Bartzella' bears dozens of huge flowers (9" across) on strong stems, above rich green foliage. There are very few yellows in the herbaceous Peony world, and none can compare with 'Bartzella' in beauty or performance. The quest for this elusive marvel began in Japan in the 1950s, but it was Roger Anderson, an amateur breeder in Wisconsin, whose 12 patient years of crosses between species finally hit the jackpot in 1980. (He didn't see 'Bartzella' bloom until 1986.) Since then, few plants have made it to the market. One of the Intersectional Peonies, ‘Morning Lilac’ is a gem that will set your garden apart with its large, fragrant, lilac-pink b...looms! Their form ranges from single to semidouble, with dark centers and unusual petals highlighted by purple and white streaks. Plants have a shapely habit and dark green leaves, and will come into flower before your herbaceous Peonies. Deer resistant, too.Hybrids between Tree Peonies and herbaceous Peonies, known as Intersectional or Itoh Peonies, are superb, long-lived plants with the large, exotic blooms and refined foliage of Tree Peonies, but with stems that die back to the ground in fall like herbaceous Peonies. Making crosses between these two groups was a horticultural feat that proved remarkably difficult to accomplish. The quest for this elusive marvel began in Japan in the late 1940s with Mr. Toichi Itoh, and was picked up by American breeders. Don Hollingsworth introduced ‘Garden Treasure’ in 1984. Rodger Anderson, an amateur breeder in Wisconsin, spent 12 patient years carrying out crosses, finally hitting the jackpot with yellow ‘Bartzella’, registered in 1986. Since then, other beautiful colors have been developed, but only a few have made it into commerce. For more information on growing Peonies, click on Growing Guide.Hardiness Zone:4,5,6,7,8,8S,8W Blooms In:June May Spacing:30-36" Height:26-28" Ships as:BAREROOT read more

Midseason. There isn't a more rewarding garden flower than the herbaceous Peony, and a garden without these plants is a sorry thing indeed. Peony flowers range from exquisitely delicate (singles) to large and lush (doubles) and come in shades ranging from pure white to the deepest, darkest red. Peonies produce an extravagant display in early June, regardless of weather.Plants in the genus Paeonia generally like full sun and neutral to slightly sweet soil, and they shrug off cold. After bloom is complete, you are left with a handsome mound of glossy, deep green foliage that will happily anchor the next sequence of bloom in the neighborhood. Peonies make superior cut flowers, lasting more than a week if cut in full bud.Southerners should seek out our early bloomers and provide afternoon shade.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,7S,7W,8,8W Blooms In:June Spacing:24-30" Height:30-36" Ships as:BAREROOT read more
