Everyone knows and loves the Asters that bloom in fall, but there are as well a handful of summer bloomers that are valued for the...ir bright blue flowers and their exceptionally long bloom time. The best of them is A. x frikartii 'Monch.' Its graceful 2-3′ stems bear masses of 2½″ flowers all summer, in an extraordinary shade of lavender blue. An outstanding middle of the border plant with Achillea, Alchemilla, Alstroemeria, Antirrhinum, and Astrantia. 'Monch' flowers best in full sun and evenly moist but well-drained soil. Best treated as an annual in the Deep South. We count Asters among the great garden plants, because many of them bloom gloriously in late summer and fall when most garden plants are spent. There are many species, all of them having the classic Daisy form (outer ray flowers surrounding a central disk). They offer a range of rich colors, often with exceptionally handsome dark green foliage, easy dispositions, hardiness, and a ton of flowers at a time when color is at a premium. In addition, some Asters are among the longest-blooming plants known, the finest attribute a plant can have. Asters need full sun and reliable moisture, and often perform best if pinched in midsummer, which discipline produces a super-abundance of bloom on a plant precisely the size you want. Many of the Narcissus that grow so brilliantly in the North fail to thrive in the heat of the South, but that is no reason to be w...ithout Daffodils. Our large bulbs produce more flowers with fewer misses their first year, then go busily about self-propagating in a site they like, actually adding to the show in future years. All they require is reasonable drainage and at least 6 hours of sun a day in spring to settle in as cheerful and permanent neighbors. The Daffodils in this mixture may be diminutive, but they have all won the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Ma...ny are fragrant, and they will provide a long season of bloom, beginning with the early midseason, cream-colored Trumpet ‘W. P. Milner,' followed by midseason 'Minnow,' 'Kokopelli,' and 'Segovia,' and finishing with pale yellow 'Angel’s Breath' and 'Sun Disc.' Bulbs are not labeled individually. 25 bulbs cover 2 sq ft. Exclusive. Daffodils reliably provide the first large flowers of spring, often putting on their colorful show against a backdrop of late season snow. And they are largely immune to voles and deer. Daffodils are easy to grow. They need good drainage and perform equally well in full sun or partial shade. They will also force their way up through turf, turning a banking or a meadow into a garden. Once bloom is complete, there is no need to remove spent blossoms, but do allow the leaves to remain in place until they yellow (6–8 weeks). This ensures the following year's display. We also recommend a top-dressing with Daffodil Fertilizer after planting, with repeat applications every fall thereafter. Even in a group noted for large flowers, vigorous growth, and sweet perfume, 'Casa Blanca' is a standout. The huge flowers are pur...e, gleaming white, delicately flocked in a way that adds richness and texture. When this Lily blooms in our Moon Garden, our staff find excuses to wander nearby, while visitors stand transfixed, lost in the perfume and admiring the hawkmoths that hover over the blooms day and evening. Adjectives like "astonishing" and "ravishing" may seem like catalog hyperbole, until you actually see one of these Lilies in bloom. Then words fail. 'Casa Blanca' is widely regarded by horticultural professionals as the best white Oriental Lily ever. Lilies are one of the truly great garden plants. Their beauty, diversity, extended season of bloom, exquisite fragrance, graceful stature, and reliable disposition reflect the fruits of hundreds of years of selective breeding. Your garden should not be without them, whether you manage acres of mixed borders or a few pots on a city balcony. Lilies prefer cool soil, which argues for shade at their feet from low-growing companions such as Ferns, Geraniums, or Hellebores. Plant Lilies in well-drained soil where they will receive 6–8 hours of sun a day. Delicate and graceful Species Lilies carry their flowers on candelebra-shaped stems and are generally more tolerant of shade. When cutting the flowers for bouquets, remove no more than 1/3 of the stem. This provides sufficient leaves on the remaining stem to renew the bulb for the coming year. Large-cupped Daffodils are the workhorses of the Daffodil world because they're good for bedding, picking, naturalizing, forcing, ...and showing. This group flaunts about every combination of white, yellow, orange, and pink. The cups are narrow or frilly or flat, some with color changes as the flowers open fully. Each bag of 100 landscape-size bulbs contains at least 10 varieties. Not labeled. 100 bulbs cover 20 sq ft. If you're just getting started, or would like to plant Daffodils in large sweeps, our landscape-size bulbs offer great value for your wallet and your time. These bulbs are about a year younger in size than our usual grade, thus priced accordingly, and all will produce one or more flowering stems their first year. This robust selection has much larger flowers than the species. It looks like a giant Lily-of-the-Valley. Smashing with Narcissus ...and midseason to late Tulips of every hue you can imagine. This heirloom was introduced by William Robinson, the influential 19th-century Irish garden writer who spurned Victorian bedding schemes and pioneered a more natural style of gardening at his home, Gravetye Manor. We favor this species of Snowflakes (Leucojum aestivum). The leaves look like those of Daffodils, as well they should, since they belong to the same family and are also deer resistant. Snowflakes are reasonably moisture tolerant but also thrive in ordinary garden soil, naturalizing in either situation. Plant them with Ferns or white Narcissus. From France comes this compact variety whose golden flowers are brighter, larger, and stacked closer along the stems from soil to ...tip. Another bonus is the dark green foliage. Forsythia Show Off is perfect for a tight hedge or a specimen in a border. A Proven Winners/Color Choice variety. 'Mindor' PP 19,321 It is impossible to live in a northern climate and be unfamiliar with Forsythia. The durability, vigor, and abundant yellow flowers of this early bloomer make it one of the most popular and important ornamental plants known. Forsythia is a vigorous grower in all but damp soils (which it doesn't like), and it can get out of control if left to its own devices. But a touch of pruning, best done right after flowering to preserve the next year's buds, produces a satisfactory form for practically any location. Snip a few arching sprays for winter forcing, and you'll never notice the difference. Underplanted with spring-flowering bulbs, Forsythia can and should be a highlight in the spring garden. It harbors no pests. Deer resistant. This first ever Sempervivum with golden foliage is bound to get lots of attention. It’s a unique variety that puts on an extended ...color show. The fleshy leaves, which are tipped in red, change to bright green in summer, and back to gold with fiery red tips in winter. Hardy to Zone 4 and robust, this succulent will keep the colors coming unless it’s covered in snow. PP 28,284The name of this genus was derived by Pliny from semper vivo and means, literally, live forever. Although each leaf rosette dies after flowering, there always seems to be an abundance of new offsets (the "chicks") to take its place. A large and diverse genus in the Mint family that includes a number of valuable garden plants. One of the best is Lamb's Ear, a cr...eeper with leaves that are so densely felted with white hairs that they appear gray or silver. This species does flower, throwing silver wands capped with small, pink or purple blooms, but its soft, woolly foliage is really the main attraction.  'Big Ears,' also known as 'Countess Helen von Stein,' produces huge leaves, growing up to 12″ long—twice as big as conventional Lamb's Ears. The look is bolder and more settled. Plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They tolerate drought, but also get by in a bit of shade and quite heavy soil. What they cannot abide is extreme heat and humidity. For more information on growing Stachys, click Growing Guide.Hardiness Zone:4,5,6,7,8,8S,8W Height:10-12" Ships as:1 PINT 28.86 CU IN. read more
