Here’s a special opportunity to own an Itoh hybrid Peony. Also known as intersectional Peonies, these hybrids arose from a cross b...etween a white Herbaceous Peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Kakoden') and a yellow hybrid Tree Peony (Paeonia x lemoinei) carried out in 1948 by Mr. Toichi Itoh. All the resulting offspring were vigorous plants with foliage similar to that of Tree Peonies, and they died back to the ground each fall like Herbaceous Peonies. 'Yellow Crown' has semidouble golden yellow flowers, reddish at the base, and can be up to 10″ across. Midseason.Peonies produce their extravagant display in early June every year, regardless of weather, because they are among the most durable and longest-lived plants. They have no natural enemies, no exacting cultural requirements beyond full sun and neutral to slightly sweet soil, and they shrug off cold. After bloom is complete, you are left with a handsome mound of glossy, deep green foliage that will happily anchor the next sequence of bloom in the neighborhood. Finally, Peonies make superior cut flowers, lasting more than a week if cut in full bud.We ship large roots with 3—5 eyes that are fresh from the growing fields. While a newly planted Peony seldom makes a first-class show in its first season, these vigorous plants will reach the top of their form in their second or third year. Also known as 'Plenus,' 'Rip van Winkle' is an heirloom Double dating before 1884. Its ancestors may well have been among the natu...ralized Daffodils that inspired William Wordsworth to pen his famous words. The blooms consist of whorls of narrow, pale greenish yellow petals, some with a slight twist. Early. Double Daffodils have a central cluster of petals and are almost roselike in form. Doubles are good for showing, bedding, and picking. Narcissus blooms are for many gardeners the first visible signs of spring. These vigorous, long-lived bulbs thrive joyously in sunny, well-drained places, are shunned by hungry deer and voles, and will thrive and multiply with little care on your part, creating a glorious landscape and a horticultural legacy. Hostas are categorically the finest ground cover for shade and one of the loveliest and most popular elements for designing a long...-term and carefree garden. But top-quality Hostas have been painfully expensive for as long as we can remember, putting large plantings out of reach for those with limited budgets. We've solved the problem by offering a collection of 4 excellent varieties, 5 plants of each, at a very attractive price. It's the building block from which you can create your own emerald isle. Plants are vigorous and healthy and will take hold quickly. 20 plants. Each variety labeled. They will cover approximately 55–60 sq ft. Exclusive. This genus of shade lovers has 70 species, all of them from China and Japan, and hybridizers have produced hundreds of exciting crosses. Hostas have many handsome leaf colorations and lavender or white Lily-like flowers on graceful stalks. Plants prefer a moist location, but we've had a mass planting thrive for more than 30 years under a row of Sugar Maples. (In the South and West, evenly moist soil is required.) Because Hostas are grown primarily for their foliage, we give the height of the leaves, not the flowers. This magnificent yellow Trumpet is the successor to the venerable 'King Alfred' as the all-around best Daffodil money can buy. The... bold blooms, with petals drawn slightly forward, are borne on 18–20″ stems. It makes a striking underplanting for Forsythia and is ideal for naturalizing. Early midseason. In Holland, Daffodil bulbs are graded by their circumference. Our usual grade of bulb produces two or more flowering stems the first year. For some varieties, such as this, we offer a size of bulb that is about a year younger than our usual grade. In the trade, these younger bulbs are often called "landscape" size. They produce one or more flowering stems the first year and are easier and quicker to plant in quantities because they fit in a smaller hole. 'Dutch Master' is also available in our usual grade. A velvety red that leans toward the blue end of the spectrum and resists fading. Blooms are very large and very frilly, and they f...loat above clean, dark green foliage on 38″ stems. Visitors at Peony time will make this their first stop. Mr. Wild has been absent from our offering for several years as we built up stock, and we're delighted to welcome him back.Peonies produce their extravagant display in early June every year, regardless of weather, because they are among the most durable and longest-lived plants. Southern gardeners should seek out our early bloomers and provide afternoon shade. For more information on growing Peonies, click on Growing Guide.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,7S,7W,8,8W Blooms In:June Spacing:24-30" Height:38" Ships as:BAREROOT read more

This mixture is a great way to get to know some of the best blues in the bulb world. We include 'Rolf Fiedler' and 'Froyle Mill,' ...with pure white 'Album' to add sparkle. They make a stunning underplanting for late-season Daffodils and midseason Tulips. The bulbs are small, quick and easy to plant, and inexpensive, so there's no reason not to give this superb mixture a try. Not labeled. 50 bulbs fill 5 sq. ft. Ipheion makes cheerful carpets of sweetly fragrant, 1″ star-shaped flowers beginning here in northern Connecticut in April. Plants grow just 3–5″ tall, so they're ideal for edging a spring border or naturalizing under deciduous trees and shrubs, where they soon spread to form impressive colonies. The foliage will persist until hot weather arrives, and then may appear again in fall, similar to Muscari, but don't be alarmed. There are as many as 90 species in this genus of Grass-like plants from the Western Hemisphere, but only Sisyrinchium angustifoliu...m is hardy for us. It's a carefree native, but we've never paid much attention to it because, frankly, it's not very showy. And then along came this selection, which we found at a nursery in Switzerland. It forms a clump of narrow, blue-green leaves 12″ tall and wide that looks for all the world like an ornamental Grass. Then, over a long period that begins in May and runs into July, it blankets itself with starry, lavender-blue flowers that are much larger than those of the species, fully 1″ across. It makes a superb edging, especially along a walk or a terrace. Plants flower best in full sun but also put on a good show in partial shade, and though the species is found in moist locations, they're not the least picky about soil. Thanks to this variety, Blue-eyed Grass finally moves from the wild to a prominent place in the garden. A White Flower Farm introduction. In May and June, when this Southeastern native bears clusters of pale blue, five-petaled flowers that are the source of its name, ...you'll think they are the reason to grow the narrowleaf Bluestar. Come fall, though, when the airy foliage turns to a cloud of gold, you'll be just as sure this is the main attraction. From spring to autumn, the narrow, almost needlelike green leaves and fine texture of Amsonia hubrichtii complement neighbors with bolder foliage. Named Perennial Plant of the Year for 2011. You'll find this graceful wildflower remarkably accommodating. Though its natural preference is for moist soils, it performs equally well on dry ones, in light shade or full sun. Best of all, this long-lived plant's acrid, milky sap makes it virtually deer-proof. Because it may also irritate the gardener's skin, gloves are advisable when planting Blue Star or cutting its flowers for indoor display. Hyacinth 'Jan Bos' is another heirloom, dating from 1910. Its bright reddish pink, slightly crinkled flowers have sparkling white ...centers.
