This mixture of large-flowered hybrids replaces the Singles strain we offered for many years because the hybrids are substantially... more perennial. They owe their durability to one of their parents, A. ficifolia, a long-lived Siberian species with Fig-like foliage. In all other respects, these are the traditional Hollyhocks, whose towering spikes of huge (4–5″) blooms are one of summer's greatest pleasures. Colors run from white to pale yellow to pink and burgundy, and plants reach heights of 6–8′. Hollyhocks will never outlive Peonies, but the plants from this Perennial Mixture carry on long after their biennial cousins are gone. Use multiple plants for a full range of color. The common Hollyhock is one of the most desirable garden plants nature ever invented. Alcea should be planted in full sun and, if placed in a protected location, might not need to be staked. Flowering begins in June here and continues into August. Rust, a fungus that appears as orange-brown spotting on the leaves, can sometimes be a problem, but seems to have little effect on the vigor of the plant. This can be avoided or diminished by providing ample air circulation around the plants. If necessary, treat with applications of Neem Oil or sulfur starting early in the season. For more information on growing Alcea, click Growing Guide.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,7S,7W,8,8W,9,9W,10,10W Blooms In:August July June Spacing:18-24" Height:6-8' Ships as:1 PINT 28.86 CU IN. read more

There are as many as 90 species in this genus of Grass-like plants from the Western Hemisphere, but only Sisyrinchium angustifoliu...m is hardy for us. It's a carefree native, but we've never paid much attention to it because, frankly, it's not very showy. And then along came this selection, which we found at a nursery in Switzerland. It forms a clump of narrow, blue-green leaves 12″ tall and wide that looks for all the world like an ornamental Grass. Then, over a long period that begins in May and runs into July, it blankets itself with starry, lavender-blue flowers that are much larger than those of the species, fully 1″ across. It makes a superb edging, especially along a walk or a terrace. Plants flower best in full sun but also put on a good show in partial shade, and though the species is found in moist locations, they're not the least picky about soil. Making crosses between these two groups was a horticultural feat that proved remarkably difficult to accomplish. The quest for this elusive marvel began in Japan in the late 1940s with Mr. Toichi Itoh, and was picked up by American breeders. Don Hollingsworth introduced 'Garden Treasure' and 'Border Charm' in 1984. Rodger Anderson, an amateur breeder in Wisconsin, spent 12 patient years carrying out crosses, finally hitting the jackpot with yellow 'Bartzella', registered in 1986. What hasn't changed is the plants themselves, which are some of the showiest and most reliable perennials for the summer garden. At peak bloom, they produce a mass of daisies so clean and bright they compete in brilliance with the sun. All they require is good, rich soil and lots of sun. When you want Daisies, this is where to look.Hardiness Zone:5,6,7,8,8S,8W,9,9W Blooms In:August July June Spacing:18-24" Height:15-18" Ships as:1 PINT 28.86 CU IN. read more

The attractive raspberry-pink blooms appear early, but the brilliant silver-spotted leaves and upright habit are what make this an... exceptional Lungwort. A cross between P. longifolia 'Bertram Anderson' and P. rubra 'Barfield Pink.' PP 12,138. These shade-loving natives of Europe and Asia are among the easiest and most desirable perennials for low light. They spread slowly from the initial clump to form an attractive ground cover. Choose a spot for them that stays moist (not wet) and has soil rich in organic matter. Cutting off old leaves right after bloom will stimulate a fresh crop that will look good for the rest of the season. They make an exquisite underplanting for Ferns, Hostas, and spring-flowering bulbs such as Daffodils. They're also useful as a soft but bright edging for a shady border. Not suited to conditions in the desert Southwest. This Tickseed has a growth habit and enthusiasm for blooming that is similar to 'Moonbeam,' but its flowers are bright golden yell...ow, and it limits its height to just 18 inches. 'Zagreb' is dandy in the front row of a border, where it fits with Campanulas and other low growing blue or red bloomers. The genus Coreopsis is composed of Daisy-like plants that are excellent for the border. Most are native to the southeastern United States and Mexico. They are not the least fussy about soil but require full sun. Remove spent flowers to ensure continuing bloom.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,8,9,9S,9W,10,10W Blooms In:August July June September Spacing:12-18" Height:12-18" Ships as:1 PINT 28.86 CU IN. read more

In our gardens, this species is a butterfly magnet during its long run of summer bloom (July to September) and a feeding station f...or goldfinches come fall. Our human visitors appreciate the tall (3–5′) wands of brilliant rosy purple flowers that open from densely packed crimson buds. A North American genus consisting of about 20 species. Perfect with Echinacea and Monarda. Liatris is excellent for cutting, superb for drying, and beautiful in the border, where it looks best planted in groups. It is also a strong favorite with many butterflies. Plants offered thrive in full sun or partial shade and well-drained, even dry, soil, but they struggle in the desert Southwest.Hardiness Zone:4,5,6,7,8,8S,8W,9,9W Blooms In:August July September Spacing:12-18" Height:3-5' Ships as:1 PINT 28.86 CU IN. read more

An Orienpet Lily with huge, 8″ flowers, intoxicatingly fragrant and borne on spires up to 2′ across for longer than you thought po...ssible. Winner of the North American Lily Society's popularity poll for 4 straight years. Stunningly beautiful Orienpet Lilies are hybrids between Oriental and Trumpet Lilies. We will continue to offer more varieties as they become available from Holland and the West Coast. Orienpets combine the best features of both groups of Lilies—fragrance, large flowers, and sturdy garden performance—but bloom about 2 weeks earlier than most Orientals. The advantage is an almost continuous sequence of Lily blooms, if you start with Asiatic varieties, then follow with Trumpets, Orienpets, and Orientals. Lilies are one of the truly great garden plants. Their beauty, diversity, extended season of bloom, exquisite fragrance, graceful stature, and reliable disposition reflect the fruits of hundreds of years of selective breeding. Your garden should not be without them, whether you manage acres of mixed borders or a few pots on a city balcony. Lilies prefer cool soil, which argues for shade at their feet from low-growing companions such as Ferns, Geraniums, or Hellebores. Plant Lilies in well-drained soil where they will receive 6–8 hours of sun a day. When cutting the flowers for bouquets, remove no more than ⅓ of the stem. This provides sufficient leaves on the remaining stem to renew the bulb for the coming year.
