If you've always wanted the intoxicating scent of Lilacs in your garden, but didn't have room for them, take a close look at this ...lovely addition to the Bloomerang family of reblooming Lilacs. Its upright, bushy form reaches just 4–5′ tall, and its dainty spikes of reddish purple buds open to intensely fragrant, soft pink flowers. 'Pink Perfume' blooms heavily in May and, after a short rest, flowers again intermittently until fall. These charming plants give a neat show of color for containers, pathways, and intimate spaces. A Proven Winners variety. PP 24,252 Plants are best pruned right after the spring bloom, as this creates a fuller shrub with more branches and thus more flowers. Bloomerang 'Pink Perfume' is mildew resistant, too. Lilacs are among the best-known, classic spring-flowering shrubs. A superior Arborvitae from the U.S. National Arboretum that will grow to 60′ or more in height, at the fantastic rate of up to 3′ ...a year! All this while keeping its glossy, green color in winter and maintaining a tight and uniform, conical shape. One tree makes an impressive specimen but many planted together will become a fast-growing, year-round, living screen or hedge. Widely adaptable to different soils and resistant to pests and diseases. No wonder 'Green Giant' won the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Gold Medal Plant Award in 1998. Although a small genus of 6 evergreen Conifers native to North America and East Asia, Thuja is important as a source of timber and ornamental trees and shrubs. You might know the weather-resistant wood of White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and Western Red Cedar (T. plicata) as the material of choice for fence posts, shingles, greenhouses, and other outdoor structures. A great number of varieties are available, selected for unusual form, color, texture, or growth rate, and are useful as specimen trees or in hedges, or in the case of dwarf forms, in rock gardens and foundation plantings. There is only one species in this Korean genus, which belongs to the same family as the common Forsythia, but there is nothing com...mon about this plant. A. distichum is an open, spreading shrub that grows to 3–5′ and produces an abundance of delightfully fragrant, pure white, star-shaped flowers at the very beginning of spring, at least 2 weeks before Forsythia. The blooms are followed by foliage of a cool bluish green. Branches cut in late winter are easily forced into bloom, and the perfume is much more pronounced indoors. Grow in full sun or partial shade and average soil, and underplant with early-flowering spring bulbs such as Scilla and Muscari. The lustrous blue-green foliage of this mounding shrub is attractive over a long season on plants that are more compact than our n...ative Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus). Gardeners who wish to grow Winterberry shrubs but have been deterred by their size will be delighted to discover this compact 3-4′... variety. An abundance of bright red berries appear in autumn, and remain on the branches well into winter adding marvelous color to the landscape. Requires a male pollinator, and we recommend Ilex verticillata Mr. Poppins (Item #63403). A Proven Winners variety. 'FarrowBPop' PP 25,835 Like most Hollies, Ilex verticillata has separate male and female plants. While only female plants can produce berries, male plants are necessary to provide pollen for their flowers. Gardeners usually give female plants a prominent spot and tuck the male plants in an out-of-the-way corner.  The genus Ilex includes some 350 species, best known for its spiny, evergreen forms with red berries. It's much harder to find selections of our deciduous, native species, I. verticillata. This highly cultivated form of the familiar Black Elder is primarily a foliage plant whose deeply cut, purple-black leaves present... themselves in graceful, fern-like fans. Plants are broadly arching and reach 6–8′ in height, perhaps 5′ wide, and make superb specimens for many situations. Large pink flowers in June lead, in due course, to black berries (we've not eaten them, but the birds do). Because plants are hardy through all of Zone 5, and into 4, they provide a very welcome alternative to Japanese Maples where exquisite foliage is needed but harsh temperatures prevail. For best shape and foliage, prune hard in early spring and provide even moisture. A remarkably beautiful plant that cleaned up the prizes at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2003. A Proven Winners/Color Choice variety. 'Eva' PP 15,575 Elders are a diverse group, primarily comprising hardy deciduous trees and shrubs, along with a few herbaceous members. They come from North America, Asia, and Europe and are known for their large heads of white or cream-colored flowers. These are followed by red, purple-black, or blue fruits, which are well regarded for making cordials and preserves. The leaves are pinnate and the more ornamental varieties have elegantly cut leaflets or variegated or colored foliage. In general, Elders are trouble-free plants, happy in ordinary soil and needing only a late-winter pruning to maintain their size and shape. From France comes this compact variety whose golden flowers are brighter, larger, and stacked closer along the stems from soil to ...tip. Another bonus is the dark green foliage. Forsythia Show Off is perfect for a tight hedge or a specimen in a border. A Proven Winners/Color Choice variety. 'Mindor' PP 19,321 It is impossible to live in a northern climate and be unfamiliar with Forsythia. The durability, vigor, and abundant yellow flowers of this early bloomer make it one of the most popular and important ornamental plants known. Forsythia is a vigorous grower in all but damp soils (which it doesn't like), and it can get out of control if left to its own devices. But a touch of pruning, best done right after flowering to preserve the next year's buds, produces a satisfactory form for practically any location. Snip a few arching sprays for winter forcing, and you'll never notice the difference. Underplanted with spring-flowering bulbs, Forsythia can and should be a highlight in the spring garden. It harbors no pests. Deer resistant. Voted top plant of 2010 by the American Nursery and Landscape Association, Hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Strawberry is a relative o...f the classic PeeGee Hydrangea that produces large flower heads starting in midsummer. They begin creamy white but turn pink and then strawberry red, or even burgundy, later in the season with the cooler night temperatures. Since new flower heads continue opening into late summer, plants can display all three color stages at any one time. The blooms are borne on red stems, too, making quite a contrast against the green leaves. 'Renhy' PP 20,670 Because Panicle Hydrangeas bloom on new growth, they typically flower normally even if the twigs have been killed back by frost. Plant in a sunny, well-drained spot; some early afternoon shade is beneficial in hot southern regions. Prune in late winter or early spring.
