Alcea Perennial Singles - Hollyhock
White Flower Farm
$29.95
at White-Flower-Farm-Spring-2017

This mixture of large-flowered hybrids replaces the Singles strain we offered for many years because the hybrids are substantially... more perennial. They owe their durability to one of their parents, A. ficifolia, a long-lived Siberian species with Fig-like foliage. In all other respects, these are the traditional Hollyhocks, whose towering spikes of huge (4–5″) blooms are one of summer's greatest pleasures. Colors run from white to pale yellow to pink and burgundy, and plants reach heights of 6–8′. Hollyhocks will never outlive Peonies, but the plants from this Perennial Mixture carry on long after their biennial cousins are gone. Use multiple plants for a full range of color. The common Hollyhock is one of the most desirable garden plants nature ever invented. Alcea should be planted in full sun and, if placed in a protected location, might not need to be staked. Flowering begins in June here and continues into August. Rust, a fungus that appears as orange-brown spotting on the leaves, can sometimes be a problem, but seems to have little effect on the vigor of the plant. This can be avoided or diminished by providing ample air circulation around the plants. If necessary, treat with applications of Neem Oil or sulfur starting early in the season. For more information on growing Alcea, click Growing Guide.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,7S,7W,8,8W,9,9W,10,10W Blooms In:August July June Spacing:18-24" Height:6-8' Ships as:1 PINT 28.86 CU IN. read more

Its light yellow, single blooms with red flares appear in midseason. Bred by Don Hollingsworth and introduced in 1984.Hybrids between Tree Peonies and herbaceous Peonies, known as Intersectional or Itoh Peonies, are superb, long-lived plants with the large, exotic blooms and refined foliage of Tree Peonies, but with stems that die back to the ground in fall like herbaceous Peonies. Making crosses between these two groups was a horticultural feat that proved remarkably difficult to accomplish. The quest for this elusive marvel began in Japan in the late 1940s with Mr. Toichi Itoh, and was picked up by American breeders. Don Hollingsworth introduced 'Garden Treasure' and 'Border Charm' in 1984. Rodger Anderson, an amateur breeder in Wisconsin, spent 12 patient years carrying out crosses, finally hitting the jackpot with yellow 'Bartzella', registered in 1986. Large, pure white, fragrant blooms with occasional flecks of crimson at the base of the center petals have made this variety a gre...at Peony for generations and our largest seller for many years. It's also the best double for southern gardens. Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Early. Peonies produce their extravagant display in early June every year, regardless of weather, because they are among the most durable and longest-lived plants. They have no natural enemies, no exacting cultural requirements beyond full sun and neutral to slightly sweet soil, and they shrug off cold. After bloom is complete, you are left with a handsome mound of glossy, deep green foliage that will happily anchor the next sequence of bloom in the neighborhood. Finally, Peonies make superior cut flowers, lasting more than a week if cut in full bud.We ship large roots with 3–5 eyes that are fresh from the growing fields. While a newly planted Peony seldom makes a first-class show in its first season, these vigorous plants will reach the top of their form in their second or third year. Southern gardeners should seek out our early bloomers and provide afternoon shade.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,7S,7W,8,8W Blooms In:June Spacing:24-36" Height:36" Ships as:BAREROOT read more
