When asked how he sees the ?new Nordic? celebrated by the Danish company Muuto, De Smedt says it is ?like an embrace of a southern culture with a northern rigueur.? The embodiment of that idea, his Stacked Shelving (2008) can be randomly stacked or precisely coordinated into a grid. The three shelves are scaled to accommodate all kinds of books. And while there are only three sizes offered, there are actually five shapes to work with, depending on how you position the two rectangles. The negative spaces created between boxes give you even more shapes with which to play. Made in China. Each shelf comes with one steel clip (in white) to connect two boxes together.
