Log Splitters

Splitting wood with an axe is backbreaking work. Reduce stress on your body by using a log splitter for the job. Manual splitters are the most affordable options, but they are slower and require more labor than pricier electric and gas models. Electric splitters can be used indoors, while gas splitters are the toughest options on the market.

This product: Craftsman 190cc* OHV 27-Ton Log Splitter ( CA Only ) $1709.99 Great bang for the buck I shopped around a lot for splitters and this one stood out as one of the best. The vertical feature is especially nice with very large pieces. I just finished some red oak that was wet and it went through it like it was nothing. Easy to start, easy to move around, runs very quiet, and has the built in cradle for horizontal. Putting the thing all together was a bit harder than I thought (time wise), but with the sale on top of a sale (I even used gift cards) and my Sears having it in stock, it was all a great deal. Quality seems great. Now I just hope to get a bunch of years and wood out of my purchase. by teach4uSugar Grove, OH | Wed, Sep 15, 2010 Was this helpful?YesNo 0 comments | flag 10 visitors found this helpfulWarranty Service? My experience certainly differed from the previous two reviewers. After splitting about 5 cords, the hydraulic valve (the one that advances or retracts the wedge) broke and the splitter was inoperable. Sears approved a repair and I took it back to the catalogue store where I had picked it up. They contracted the repair to a local company, and it took them over 3 months to get the valve replaced! I definitely wouldn't buy this splitter if you have to depend on using for business! Also the Briggs engine runs OK, but there is no accessible drain for the crankcase oil. Of course it burns enough I guess you can just keep adding oil without actually changing it. If I had it to do over, I'd buy the splitter with the Honda motor. by WoodStoveUserJune Lake, CA | Tue, Feb 10, 2009 Was this helpful?YesNo 0 comments | flag 2 visitors found this helpfulAwesome I purchased this unit last year and have had 0 problems. Let me first say I split approx 200 truckloads of firewood a year. (side business) This splitter has amazed me! I split all kinds of wood- oak, cherry, elm, ect. So far there has been nothing that will stop this machine! what it doesn't split, it shears right thru! I unbolted the side bracket on 1 side, welded a table to the bracket and re attached it. I now split 16 inch long, pieces of wood that 1 person alone cannot pick up by themselves. It also always starts and runs a long time on a tank of gas (important when gas is $3.00 a gallon). I highly recommend this product to everyone! I do not like how easy the fenders break. They are made flimsy. The side catchers that stop the wood from falling, break real easy as well. I purchased the 27 ton log splitter for a couple of reasons. First being I soley heat my home with wood. Second reason is to save time. The 27 ton Craftsman model had a few plus's to go along with it. Sears did not charge shipping costs. It was turn key in the sense the fluids were included. Then the fact it was on sale, saving me over $300 hundred less then the other model I was looking at. After looking at several differen't log splitters for a year. My choice boiled down to this one. The "power" of the unit was shown on the first use. Red Oak rounds I split are over 24" in diamitter. The wedge hit the log and paused for one second then the secondary on the pump kicked in. The sweet sound of splitting wood echoed in my backyard. Used it for over an hour to get the feel of operation the machine has. Before I knew it there was more then a half a cord of split wood to stack. Really like the auto return feature. It saves time has you get the next log. The only couple of cons are the gas tank, also the trailer pin to secure the stand leg. So far my new log splitter is showing NO signs of leaking any fluids. Starts on the first pull. It's quiet not disturbing my neighbors. The manual stated with proper up keep and checking the fluid regularly. The 27 ton log splitter will earn its keep for over seven years before a major overhual may be in the cards? Only time will tell if this will be the case. So far I am totaly happy with the purchase. It sure beats a splitting maul and a wedge. I would recommend this product to a friend. by weld387Douglasville, GA | Mon, May 2, 2011 Was this helpful?YesNo 0 comments | flag Easy enough for a girl to use!!!! Pros - This 27 ton splitter will split just about anything! I split stump cuts that were nearly 36" in diameter, just had to reverse the stump for a second cut. Motor starts on first pull and runs quietly, does not lug much even on gnarly wood cuts in fresh wood. For this 72 year old, cutting in the vertical position is much better. Recycle time on ram is 10 seconds. Easy hookup for towing, comes with trailer jack and safety chains. Economical, can cut a cord of wood on a tank of gas, including those 36" stumps. For the price I paid at the outlet store you can not beat the value. Being at an outlet store my splitter was a little over $1k out the door, so defintiely priced right. Highly recommend. Cons- If you buy from an outlet store and it says "fully reconditioned" or "Floor Model" INSIST that it be started there at the store! I took it on faith that it was ready to go. It was full of gas, full of all oils, but tires were nearly flat. Got it home and it would not start. After about an hour of trouble shooting found it had a bad plug, replaced that and now works wonderfully. As stated, at 72 years old and 120 lbs. soaking wet, the ram cylendar is almost too heavy for me to lift to the vertical position. The ram could be more evenly centered for ease of lifting. It has a max towing speed of 45mph and if I got above that the whole thing tended to start vibrating. Also, check with your DMV for your state, here in Texas, since it has a gas tank on it and carries fuel, it has to be titled and tagged for towing, Should I have to take mine any distance, it will ride on the back of my utility trailer! There is a very small spike and couple of circle ridges on the base to hold a log, but they should be sharper. The spike is actually almost like a rounded tip instead of a spike, but with careful positioning I did not have problems with any of my logs. Safety is the key for the base, make sure your log is secure before applying full ram pressure to avoid a "popout". Would like to see this model with true 12" or 13" highway tires on it. Did not have manual with it, as a floor model, but they printed one off the net for me. Their specs online are deficient, no cycle time, no highway max speed, no tank capacities, etc. And, lastly, if you shop for one at an outlet store, know what you are looking at because no one at the outlet store had a clue about how to describe it, let alone how to start it! But, for my use, it has turned out to be a great value and would recommend it to anyone. I would recommend this product to a friend. by Lobowolf42Red Oak, TX | Sun, Mar 2, 2014 Was this helpful?YesNo 0 comments | flag 4 visitors found this helpfulVerified PurchaseNeeds redesigned I purchased this log splitter about a month ago after doing extensive research on a lot of different brands. For the price to size comparison it was perfect. The problem that I found with this log splitter is that there are no spikes of any type in the base plate to hold the wood in place while its being split. I usually split 5-7 cords of wood per year so I have quite a bit of experience with splitting wood. I was a little disappointed when I realized there were no spikes because when I got the log splitter, I was very impressed with the look of it. The engine is fairly quiet, the reinforced hydraulic lines were reassuring. The read more
