This Climbing Hydrangea is a vigorous deciduous vine from Japan and Korea whose heart-shaped foliage and large white clusters of J...une flowers make it an attractive covering for a wall, fence, or large tree. In sun or shade (afternoon shade is required in the Deep South and in western Zones 9 and 10) and in moist but well-drained soil, it will eventually grow to 40′ or more (it’s a bit slow starting). Plants have lateral branches that grow out as much as 3′ from the supporting structure, giving a rich, deep texture that is quite unlike that of other vines. The dried flower heads and reddish brown, peeling bark are attractive in winter. Produces aerial roots that cling to its support. Not well adapted to the dry heat of desert regions. Blooms on old wood. Hydrangea is a valuable genus of some 100 species of shrubs and vines grown for their large and very showy flower heads. Hydrangeas are at their best in summer and fall—a quiet time for most woody plants—and are worth having for that reason alone. This mixture of large-flowered hybrids replaces the Singles strain we offered for many years because the hybrids are substantially... more perennial. They owe their durability to one of their parents, A. ficifolia, a long-lived Siberian species with Fig-like foliage. In all other respects, these are the traditional Hollyhocks, whose towering spikes of huge (4–5″) blooms are one of summer's greatest pleasures. Colors run from white to pale yellow to pink and burgundy, and plants reach heights of 6–8′. Hollyhocks will never outlive Peonies, but the plants from this Perennial Mixture carry on long after their biennial cousins are gone. Use multiple plants for a full range of color. The common Hollyhock is one of the most desirable garden plants nature ever invented. Alcea should be planted in full sun and, if placed in a protected location, might not need to be staked. Flowering begins in June here and continues into August. Rust, a fungus that appears as orange-brown spotting on the leaves, can sometimes be a problem, but seems to have little effect on the vigor of the plant. This can be avoided or diminished by providing ample air circulation around the plants. If necessary, treat with applications of Neem Oil or sulfur starting early in the season. For more information on growing Alcea, click Growing Guide.Hardiness Zone:3,4,5,6,7,7S,7W,8,8W,9,9W,10,10W Blooms In:August July June Spacing:18-24" Height:6-8' Ships as:1 PINT 28.86 CU IN. read more
