Salad Bowls & Spinners Buying Guide
A new salad bowl and salad spinner can make you feel happy and healthy at the same time. Spinners take the hassle out of washing greens and getting them dry and crisp. They can be used to clean and dry other vegetables and berries, too. Once spun dry, greens can be tossed in a beautiful bowl for a splendid salad presentation.
Types of Salad Bowls & Spinners
Making salad can be hassle-free with the help of a salad spinner, a device that, in essence, washes salad greens and then wrings out the water. Plus, lettuce stays fresh and crisp when stored in the spinner (with the lid on) in the refrigerator. So, get spinning!
Salad bowls come in all shapes, styles, and sizes. When buying, consider the size of your family, as well as how often you serve salad to guests. You’ll likely want at least a couple salad bowls in varying sizes to accommodate different crowds.

Salad spinners have a variety of lids that control the spinning. Take a look and decide whether you prefer to push a button, turn a crank, or pull a cord to get it spinning. You’ll learn what you like by testing products or trying a friend’s spinner before buying.
The problem is not washing salad greens, the difficulty lies in drying them. A wet spinach leaf, or a damp piece of Boston lettuce... will turn limp in the bowl and dilute the dressing. Since oil and water do not mix, the oil will never cling to wet greens, instead it will pool in the bottom of the bowl, leaving your salad naked, rather than properly dressed. There are many ways to leave your greens high and dry and ready for dressing, but the most efficient technique is to use a salad spinner. The method works because of centrifugal force. As the basket spins the greens and the water are forced from the center to the sides, the greens are trapped against the grid, while the water flies out past the greens. The gears on this salad spinner are well-integrated and there is a brake that brings the spinner to a quick halt (no need to wait until the basket stops spinning). It also has a non-skid base that keeps the basket from sliding around on your work surface. Specifically designed for comfort and function, the soft rounded pump fits in your palm and absorbs pressure while you work. The clear base is dishwasher safe and can double as a serving or storage bowl. read more

Before purchasing salad bowls or a salad spinner, think about the quantity of salad you typically prepare. Do you usually use 4 cups of salad greens or 10 cups? The amount of greens you use will be a big factor in the salad bowl and spinner size you choose. Bowl selection also depends on whether you like wood, glass, decorative ceramic, or plastic. Spinner selection comes down to size and the type of spinning mechanism you prefer.
Many salad bowls are made of woods such as cherry, walnut, acacia, or bamboo. Other options include glass, ceramic, and, of course, plastic. Matching pieces for tossing and serving salad can be an added bonus to your salad bowl purchase.
Sloped sides, straight sides, or simply shallow ... what is best? If tossed salads are your favorite, consider a bowl with slanted sides, making it easy to mix the ingredients. However, if your specialty is layered salads, select a straight-sided glass bowl so the colorful layers can be seen.
Before you make a salad bowl purchase, factor in how many people you most often serve and where you plan to store the bowl. If you have the room for storage, you might consider two bowls -- one for everyday use and one large enough to serve a crowd. Single-serving salad bowls can complement the large salad bowl.
Salad spinners typically include a clear plastic or stainless-steel bowl, a plastic basket, and a plastic lid. Some lids are see- through so you can see what’s spinning.
While a pump-and-brake system is the most common, a few models offer a retractable cord. The choice is yours whether you’d like to pump an easy-to-press button a few times to spin the basket or simply pull a cord to get the spinning started. The brake is usually a button that stops the basket from spinning.
If you like, the bowl of the spinner can also serve as a serving bowl, and the basket can be used as a colander.
Salad spinners are available in a couple different sizes, so consider the amount of storage space you have before making a purchase. If you opt for a smaller version, you may need to clean salad greens in batches.

Made of best quality earthenware Accented with attractive fruit motifs Microwave, freezer, oven, and dishwasher safe Measures 5.5 ...diam. inches Whats Included BowlDescription About Portmeirion Strikingly beautiful, eminently practical, refreshingly affordable. These are the enduring values bequeathed to Portmeirion by its legendary co-founder and designer, Susan Williams-Ellis. Her father, architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, was the designer of Portmeirion, the North Wales village whose fanciful architecture has drawn tourists and artists from around the world (including the creators of the classic 1960s TV show The Prisoner). Inspired by her fine arts training and creation of ceramic gifts for the villages gift shop, Susan Williams-Ellis (along with her husband Euan Cooper-Willis) founded Portmeirion Pottery in 1960. After 50+ years of innovation, the Portmeirion Group is not only an icon of British design, but also a testament to the extraordinarily creative life of Susan Williams-Ellis. The style of Portmeirion dinnerware and serveware is marked by a passion for both pottery manufacturing and trend-setting design. Beautiful, tactile, nature-inspired patterns are a defining quality of Portmeirion housewares, from its world-renowned botanical designs modeled on antiquarian books to the breezy, natural colors of its porcelain and earthenware. Today, the Portmeirion Groups design legacy continues to evolve, through iconic brands such as Spode, the Pomona Classics collection, and the award-winning collaboration of Sophie Conran for Portmeirion. Pomona for Portmeirion: Classical in both its inspiration and its style, the Pomona Collection from Portmeirion Group is a garden of earthly delights. Named for the ancient Roman goddess of fruit and abundance, its lifelike patterns and fruit motifs are inspired by a collection of early 19th-century books of hand-colored botanical drawings. The Pomona Collection was introduced in 1982 by legendary designer and Portmeirion co-founder Susan Williams-Ellis, whose iconic garden- and botanical-themed designs are still among the worlds most popular casual tableware motifs. The Pomona Collections intricately detailed botanical drawings feature green leaf borders and multi-color fruit displays on a background of high-fired white earthenware. Each distinctive motif bears an elegant cursive title to indicate its botanical origins. These include The Hoary Morning Apple, The Teinton Squash Pear, The Wild Blackberry, The Roman Apricot, Grimwoods Royal George (Peach), and The Late Duke Cherry. Together, the multiple motifs and dishes of the Pomona Collection of serveware, dinnerware, and drinkware create bountiful opportunities for mixing and matching sets. Made of dense earthenware, these pieces are dishwasher-, microwave-, freezer-, and oven-safe (to 350°F). Give nature its fullest expression in every season and setting with the Pomona Collection from Portmeirion. read more
