Pizza Ovens Buying Guide
Home pizza ovens come in handy for cooking frozen or fresh pizzas, heating a variety of snacks, and warming sandwiches. Their small size and energy-saving operation make using a whole oven seem like a lot of extra work and energy. For foods with a crispy crust but a warm, gooey middle, a pizza oven has its specific task mastered.
Types of Pizza Ovens
Pizza ovens can be large enough to accommodate a pizza stone or small enough to hold a hot sandwich. The bigger they are, the more sophisticated they tend to be. If you want a pizza oven to handle the basics, a small, inexpensive unit works well. For more precise cooking and the ability to handle a variety of foods, go bigger.
This type of pizza oven has heating elements on the top and bottom but isnt enclosed. The pizza rotates between the elements for even cooking; ingredients can be added to the pizza as it turns and bakes. This model makes it easy to monitor the browning and doneness.
A traditional countertop pizza oven looks somewhat like a toaster oven. Some models are made to bake on a pizza stone, while others have very basic functions and settings.
This style of countertop machine has heating elements on the top and bottom and a built-in baking stone, making it easy to produce brick oven-style pizza in about 10 minutes. With settings for thin, medium, and thick crusts, the cooking time automatically adjusts. Because the oven is enclosed, the doneness cannot be easily monitored, and you must rely on the settings.
This electric model mimics old-world pizza-making without having to tend to a wood fire. If you have an outdoor kitchen, a high-end artisan-style pizza oven is fun to have.
If youre a fan of frozen pizza or frequently heat up frozen appetizers or crusty sandwiches, dedicating counter space to a pizza oven may be well worth it. If price matters, it will help narrow your choices, as these ovens vary in price and style. Choose a style that best fits your pizza preference -- frozen or homemade. Some models are better than others for each.
With three styles of countertop pizza bakers available, pick the one that best suits your needs. If you simply want to heat a frozen pizza, choose between the traditional toaster-oven-style pizza baker and the open, rotating baker.
The open, rotating model is the least expensive but also the least flexible. Features on pricier models offer added functionality.
Some units have the capacity to cook more than one pizza at a time, so this is a good option if you have a large family or entertain for a crowd. Because the interior is small, convection heat makes cooking even as the air circulates around the food.
Not all people like their pizzas the same, so if you have a preference as to how you like your pizza baked, look for a unit with crust settings and/or adjustable timers.
Some models encase the pizza, so it is difficult to monitor the baking progress. If peeking at the pizza is your thing, choose a toaster-oven-style pizza maker with a glass window or the open, rotating style.
