Knife Storage Buying Guide

Keeping kitchen knives in a safe place protects you and your product. Tossing knives in a drawer may be convenient, but you risk blade edges getting blunted and fingers getting cut. Convenient and safe storage is a must in any kitchen for easy food-prep access.

Types of Knife Storage

Types of Knife Storage

Wood blocks, magnetic strips, undercounter mounts, and in-the-drawer trays are all viable options for storing knives. How you plan to access your knives and how visible you want them in your kitchen are two main questions to answer before buying knife storage.

Wood Block

Stored either on the counter or tucked in a cabinet or drawer, a wood block is a traditional way to store knives. Wood protects knives from moisture and corrosion while still offering fast access. A hardwood knife block with slots for a variety of sizes can come in several types of wood, such as maple, beech, or bamboo.

In a Drawer

Safely store knives in a drawer with a wood or stainless-steel tray. This solution keeps knives organized with a slotted knife tray for varying sizes. This is a great answer when storing steak knives. Traditional hardwood, stainless steel with rubber lining, and hard plastic trays are all options.

Under the Counter

Mounting knives under a cabinet or counter is an efficient way to store knives and save counter space. Hardwood knife blocks are available for this style of mounting, and some even feature a sharpening steel as part of the storage package.

Individual Blade Protectors

If you prefer to store individual knives in drawers, there are knife guards available in rubberized, plastic, and polypropylene materials. This is a great solution if you run out of slots in another storage system yet still need to protect extra knives in your collection.

Purchase Considerations

Purchase Considerations

When buying knife storage products, consider where you plan to keep the knives in your kitchen. Your counter or storage space will dictate what type of product works best in your home.

At the Ready

If you plan to store knives on the counter or in a drawer, a wood-block option is likely the best solution. If it will be visible in your kitchen, think about how the design and wood type will fit with the rest of your kitchen decor.

Off the Wall

Magnetic strips for knives are made of steel, so before you buy, think about how a steel strip will fit into your kitchen color scheme and wall space. If you have young children, be sure to mount this storage strip out of the reach of little hands.

Styles

Mix styles of knife-storage units to accommodate different knives. A wood block on the counter is nice for knives that are frequently used, while a tray in a drawer is good for those that may not be used very often, such as steak knifes. Individual blade protectors or covers are perfect for knives that won't fit in your wood block and instead get placed in a drawer.
