Electric Knives Buying Guide
Carving the Thanksgiving turkey or holiday ham is much easier with an electric knife. Whether corded or battery-operated, these knives help cut thin or thick slices of succulent poultry, beef, pork, or lamb -- and you never have to worry about whether your carving set is sharp.
Types of Electric Knives
Look for stainless-steel electric knives with blades at least 7 to 9 inches long. Many models are made with a removable blade for cleaning and storing. Serrated edges on most models make them great not only for cutting meats but also thinly slicing breads and cheeses. Electric knives fall into two categories: with cords, and without.
A corded electric knife offers plenty of power and consistent carving capabilities. Be sure you have a cord long enough to reach an electrical outlet from the spot where youll most commonly be using the knife.
Featuring a rechargeable battery, cordless knives are easy to operate anywhere -- in your home, in the backyard, at a campsite, wherever. Check each models specifics to see how long you can expect a charged battery to last.
An electric knife is probably not something youll use every day, but if you roast or grill whole chickens or turkeys or beef or pork roasts, it may be something you turn to regularly. Be sure you have a safe place to store the electric component and blades when not in use. Opt for a knife with a case for the safest storage.
Some handles are ergonomically designed for easier use. Choose a handle that makes it easy to both hold the knife and operate the control button with the same hand.
Many models come with two serrated blades, one for slicing meats and the other for breads. Be sure you have the appropriate blades for what you want to do.
If you opt for a corded model, make sure the cord is long enough to use in your location of choice.
Most blades are removable for cleaning. Although washing by hand is easy, if you prefer to use the dishwasher, make sure the blades are dishwasher-safe.
Some models come with a storage case or unit for the blades as well as the electric component. Because an electric knife is not an appliance you will use every day, having a storage unit is handy.
There arent huge price differences, but if you think you will regularly use an electric knife, its worth the extra money to pay for a more reputable brand with higher quality.
