Wall Ovens Buying Guide

Wall ovens are recessed into the wall for a built-in look. Often used in conjunction with a separate cooktop, wall ovens are available as either electric or gas-powered units. Because they are placed higher than an oven in a standard range, they eliminate the need to bend down to remove heavy dishes of food. Wall ovens use a variety of heating methods to cook food; higher-price models can significantly cut cooking times.

Types of Wall Ovens

Types of Wall Ovens

When selecting a wall oven, make sure it will fit into your space; you can opt for a single wall oven or a double wall unit for more cooking space and versatility. Traditional ovens use thermal heat to cook food, but a variety of new technologies can speed up cooking times and improve flavor and presentation. Electric ovens are more common, but gas models are also available.

Single Wall Ovens

These electric or gas units consist of one oven recessed into the wall. Most use standard thermal heat, but some use convection heat or a speed-cook technology. Some models divide the cooking space between two smaller ovens, so you can cook multiple dishes at different temperatures.

Convection Ovens

Convection units use a fan to move air around the oven cavity, helping to ensure that food is nicely browned on the outside and fully cooked on the inside. These ovens speed up cooking times considerably, but the fan takes up useable oven space, slightly reducing the oven capacity. Convection ovens are typically more expensive than standard ovens.

Speed-Cook Ovens

These ovens combine convection and microwave technologies for faster cooking. Trivection models use a combination of thermal, convection, and microwave heat for extremely fast cooking. Using multiple technologies at once also helps to improve moistness, crispness, and browning for a variety of food types. Expect to pay a premium for this feature.

Steam Ovens

Steam cooking retains more vitamins than other cooking methods. It offers even baking and is great for fish and vegetables, but it doesn't brown food. Some ovens combine steam and convection heat, so you can use one or both technologies for greater versatility.

Product Features

Product Features

If you're a regular cook, look for features that enhance convenience and help you cook multiple dishes at once. Also consider features such as a self-cleaning option or a hidden bake element that will make the oven easier to clean.

Multiple Rack Positions

The more rack positions your oven has, the more easily you'll be able to accommodate large cookware and move food farther from or closer to the heat source. Look for a model with at least five rack positions for maximum flexibility. Three racks are better than two, because you'll have more flexibility when cooking multiple items at once. Some models feature half racks, which allow you to cook a tall item at the same time as shorter items.

Self-Cleaning Function

The most common type of self-cleaning oven uses high temperatures to burn off food debris inside the oven. After the self-cleaning function runs, you can easily wipe away the remaining gray ash with a sponge. Some models use steam to shorten the cleaning cycle and save energy.

Delayed Start

With this feature you can program your oven to start cooking at a set time, so dinner can be ready when you walk in the door. However, keep in mind that it's unsafe to leave the oven unattended, and most foods shouldn't stay in a cold oven for long.

Hidden Bake Element

Ovens with this feature include a heating element hidden below the oven floor, which makes the unit easier to clean.

Electronic Controls

Touchpad controls are common in electric ovens. Compared to traditional knobs, they can more precisely control the oven temperature.

Purchase Considerations

Purchase Considerations

As you're shopping for a wall oven, look for models with features that fit the way you cook and complement your kitchen's style. Keep in mind that a wall oven and cooktop configuration will offer additional cooking space and greater design flexibility, but it will often cost more than a stand-alone range.

Heating Type

One of the first decisions you'll need to make is whether you want a gas or electric unit. If you don't have a gas connection in your kitchen, an electric model is likely your best bet. There are more electric units to choose from, and prices start a bit lower. However, gas ovens help food retain moisture and can be more efficient. You might need to rotate food for even cooking in gas units.

Size

Wall ovens generally come in 24-, 27-, or 30-inch widths. Be sure to carefully check the oven's dimensions if you are replacing an existing wall oven or trying to fit the wall oven within a specific cabinet size. Because the oven will be built-in, it needs to be flush with surrounding cabinetry. Also consider the size of the oven's interior; opt for a large oven cavity if you often cook for large groups of people.

Finish

Stainless steel, white, and black are the most popular finishes. Stainless steel offers a sleek look, but it often costs more than a black or white finish and shows fingerprints more. Match the finish on other kitchen appliances for a unified look.

Convenience

Shop for features that will make the oven easier to use and better equip you for entertaining and preparing everyday dinners. For example, oven racks with a smooth gliding ball-bearing system make it easier to slide racks in and out. A large oven window lets you check on food without opening the door and losing heat. If you entertain often or cook for a large family, a double oven is perfect for cooking multiple dishes as once. To keep dinner warm for late family members, consider buying an oven with a hold feature that will keep food warm without overcooking it.
