Refrigerators Buying Guide

Refrigerators are a key element in any kitchen, so you'll want to find a model that suits your space and your storage needs. Take a look at this buying guide to help you figure out which style is right for you and which storage features are most important for your household.

Types of Refrigerators

Types of Refrigerators

Refrigerators are available in several configurations, such as top-freezer, bottom-freezer, and side-by-side models. Each type offers distinct advantages; before you shop for a new refrigerator, think about which type best suits your storage needs. Also consider which kind will fit into your allotted space, keeping in mind issues such as door clearance and cabinet depth. Here's a look at the most common types of refrigerators and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Top-Freezer Refrigerators

As the name implies, this type of refrigerator features the freezer compartment above the refrigerator section. It's the most traditional type of refrigerator, although other configurations are becoming more popular. They usually offer the most storage space for their size and will accommodate large trays and platters. However, you must bend to reach the lower shelves and bins, and their wide-swinging doors can cause traffic jams in smaller kitchens.

Side-by-Side Refrigerators

These refrigerators are split in half vertically, so the freezer compartment is on one side and the refrigerator compartment is on the other. The narrow doors are an advantage in small kitchens, but most doors don't open wide enough to accommodate some pizza boxes or large platters of food. Items tend to get lost in the back of the refrigerator, but this design makes it easier for kids to access both fresh and frozen foods.

Bottom-Freezer Refrigerators

In this type of refrigerator, the freezer compartment is below the refrigerated section. It's a more ergonomic setup because it places the refrigerator -- which people use more often than the freezer -- at eye level. Newer French-door models offer two narrow doors on the refrigerator section and a freezer drawer below, providing a design that amplifies storage and works well in small kitchens. Some models add a refrigerator or freezer drawer between the refrigerator and freezer compartments.

Built-In Refrigerators

Designed to fit almost flush with surrounding cabinetry, built-in refrigerators provide a custom look -- but come with a higher price tag. Built-in models are typically side-by-side or bottom-freezer units (including French-door models); most accept front panels to make the refrigerator match your kitchen cabinets.

Cabinet-Depth Refrigerators

These models offer the look of a built-in unit at a lower price. Cabinet-depth refrigerators stick out only a little farther than built-in models, and many accept front-cabinet panels for a seamless look. Many cabinet-depth models are side-by-side units, but top- and bottom-freezer units are also available.

Refrigerator Drawers

These refrigerators can be installed below the counter to provide easy access to snacks and drinks or place fruits and vegetables within easy reach of the kitchen's prep area. Because refrigerator drawers don't offer much capacity, they are usually used to supplement a full-size refrigerator.

Product Features

Product Features

As you're shopping for a refrigerator, look for features that will increase versatility. Consider storage elements that can be adjusted to fit various items. Think about how you cook and eat, and choose features accordingly; for example, if you eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, look for drawers that control temperature and humidity to prolong freshness. Some features, such as ice and water in the door, decrease reliability but increase convenience, so carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each. Here are a few of the features to consider when shopping.

Adjustable Door Bins and Shelves

Use these features to make room for tall items. Some refrigerators include elevator shelves, which allow you to raise or lower them without taking everything out of the refrigerator. Split shelves also increase flexibility; they let you adjust shelves to different heights.

Temperature-Controlled Drawers

These drawers can be set to a temperature several degrees cooler than the rest of the refrigerator. They are ideal for storing meat, fish, and cold cuts. Some drawers also can chill or thaw the contents quickly.

Through-the-Door Water and Ice Dispenser

This feature is included in most side-by-side refrigerators, but it's available in other models as well. It's a convenience that many families use regularly, but refrigerators with ice and water in the door use more energy and often require more repairs.

High-Tech Features

Some refrigerators include multimedia features such as televisions and Internet-connected devices. They allow you to check the weather, organize your family's schedule, and catch up on the news. But keep in mind these features substantially increase the price of the refrigerator.

Door or Temperature Alarms

Refrigerators with these alarms will alert you if the door has been left open for more than a few minutes, helping to keep food from spoiling and reducing energy costs.

Spillproof Glass Shelves

These shelves have raised edges that help capture spills and prevent them from leaking onto lower shelves.

Freshness Features

A variety of features claim to help keep food fresh longer. Look for sensor-base temperature- and humidity-regulation systems and crisper drawers that help vacuum-seal produce. Models with dual evaporators can help maintain higher humidity levels in the fresh-food section and prevent odors from spreading from one compartment to another.

Purchase Considerations

Purchase Considerations

Two of the biggest factors to consider when shopping for a refrigerator are size and capacity. You want to make sure the refrigerator fits your space, but you also need to make sure it offers enough interior storage for your family's needs. Since refrigerators use a considerable amount of energy, choosing an energy-efficient model will lead to significant cost savings in the long run. Also consider day-to-day convenience, and choose a model that offers features to make cleaning and organizing food as easy as possible.

Size/Placement

Before heading to the store, measure your space carefully. If you're replacing a refrigerator, measure the height, width, and depth of the model you'll be replacing, and be sure to leave about an inch of space between the refrigerator and surrounding cabinetry for airflow. Think about the refrigerator's placement and how wide the doors can open, taking into account any adjacent cabinets or appliances. Think about which direction you want the doors to open, and choose a model with doors that open in that direction or that can be reversed. Also measure your home's interior doorways to make sure your new refrigerator can fit through the doors.

Capacity

In addition to the outside dimensions of the refrigerator, you'll need to consider its interior capacity. Keep in mind that not all of the interior capacity is usable space, so look at the storage features of various models carefully. Bottom-freezer and side-by-side models often have higher capacities than top-freezer models, but they don't always have more usable space. Built-in and cabinet-depth refrigerators lose out on some interior space because they are not as deep as freestanding units. Water and ice dispensers also take up space that could otherwise be used for food storage.

Energy Use

To decrease energy costs, look for a refrigerator that's Energy Star-certified. Keep in mind that efficiency varies by the type of refrigerator, so look carefully at the annual operating costs and the kilowatt-hours per year that the refrigerator uses. In general, top-freezer models use 10-25 percent less energy than bottom-freezer or side-by-side models. Automatic icemakers and through-the-door ice and water dispensers increase energy use considerably.

Finish

The most common finishes for refrigerators are white, black, and stainless steel. Although real stainless steel offers a professional look, it shows fingerprints and is not magnetic. Manufacturers have introduced faux stainless-steel finishes that resist fingerprints and are magnetic -- making it much easier to hang kidsÂ’ artwork on the fridge and enjoy a professional-style kitchen.

Convenience

You'll likely be using the refrigerator many times a day, so it needs to be easy to use. Look for features that simplify storing and locating food, such as sliding shelves that help you access items at the back of the refrigerator. If you choose a bottom-freezer configuration, look for a freezer compartment with baskets that can help you organize frozen foods. In any model, look for LED lighting that is energy-efficient and makes the refrigerator's contents easier to see. Other useful features, such as antibacterial coatings that can slow mold growth, help you keep your refrigerator clean. If you entertain often, look for features designed for entertaining staples, such as a full-width deli tray that allows you to store large platters of meats and cheeses or a dedicated wine-storage area.
