Cooktop Buying Guide
If you're shopping for a new cooktop, this buying guide will help you select the model that best suits your cooking style and kitchen design. Installing a separate cooktop and wall oven provides abundant cooking capacity and allows for more design flexibility than installing a range -- but keep in mind that this setup will generally be more expensive.
Types of Cooktops
Cooktops use a variety of fuels to heat the burners -- electric, gas, and induction cooktops are the most common. They are generally available in 30- and 36-inch widths. To select the best cooktop for your kitchen, consider how you usually cook and what features are most important to you. Do you want to be able to boil water quickly or simmer delicate sauces? Or is easy cleanup the top priority? Your answers to these questions can point you in the right direction.
Electric cooktops are powered either by electric coils (in low-cost models) or by radiant-heat elements under a layer of ceramic glass in the more-common smooth-top models. These cooktops don't require a pilot light, and the smooth surface makes it easy to wipe up spills -- although the surface does require a special cleaner and can be damaged by dropped pots.

Sun, May 5, 2013 Will update rating, comments and recommendation if Sears makes this right Just received the cooktop a couple of weeks ago, beautiful. Was cleaning off grease, lifted up the downdraft grate a few inches to get the grease under it, slipped out of my fingers, fractured the cooktop, now it's a fire hazard in the middle of my kitchen. I understand it's my fault for not being more careful, but I can't imagine I'm the first person this has happed to. The grate should have some type of feature designed in to it to make it easier to grasp and therefore not have drop out of your fingers when greasy. Also, I undderstand heat transfer is an important characteristic for a cooktop, but they could consider a more resistant, yes, less efficient, and therefore more reliable product. Something good has to come of this disaster. Was this helpful? Yes No Flag KateInSmithfield Smithfield, VA 12 of 12 people found this review helpful. Mon, Mar 11, 2013 Love It!! I purchased this to replace an existing 30" Kenmore downdraft cooktop, that was pretty much identical. The old one still worked, but it looked a bit tired, so I decided to upgrade. It turned out to be much more than just a cosmetic upgrade. I like the bridge burner very much and the down draft on this one does a much better job than my old one. I agree with the review that suggests Kenmore should make the underside assembly more flexible. My fiance installed it for me and thank goodness he is very mechanically inclined. He had to reconfigure quite a few things to make it work. It did not just drop in easily to replace my old Kenmore downdraft. Making things reversible underneath would make for greater ease of installation. Can't wait to try my Turbo Boil. I would recommend this product to a friend. Sun, Mar 10, 2013 Looks good, Installation challenging, functionality so-so. I too replaced my JennAir with this cooktop. However...It wasn't a 1-for-1 swap. Online dimensions were different from spec sheet which were different from actual. Had to shave some marble. What a mess!! Had to fabricate a duct from the unit to the floor (made it out of duct tape). Make sure the unit fits, then attatch the blower BEFORE you drop it in. The large Rt. side burner is too close to the knobs. A regular skillet butts up against the knobs and therefore can't be centered on the burner. The hot counter-top safety lights are so discrete, you can't tell which burner is hot/on unless you have more than one hot. Always scanning to make sure burners are off rather than just hot. I hate the smooth glass top electric cooktop I bought to replace my 27 yr old electric coil type last year so when it came time to choose what to put in my new 2nd home I really wanted to try an induction cooktop. We live at 7300' and it only took 21/2 minutes to bring a pot of water to a boil . It is extremely easy to keep clean as nothing burns onto it. The cooktop is very new, so I can't make a statement about how well it will hold up, but I do love this cooktop more than an electric stove and more than gas. One piece of advice: check your stainless cookware. My beloved set of stainless did not work on this cooktop. I didn't realize that my stainless has a fine coating of aluminum on the bottom. It just was not able to magnetize enough to be recognized by the induction element. The sides of the pans were fine, the bottom was a no-go. Purchased an inexpensive set from "Cooks" and I think I am going to love it just as much as my old set. Have fun with your new induction cooktop! KitchenAid recommended repair company has been out three times and we are waiting again for parts. One board needed to be replaced, but after hours on the phone with Kitchenaid's help desk the service company was told three boards needed to be replaced to correct just the one bad board, increasing the repair cost from $300 to $1,000. We have been only able to use two burners on this cooktop for five months while waiting for parts and they just pushed the expected date out another month. My suggestion to interested buyers... don't purchase this cooktop without the extended warranty. When it works, it's lovely, but it is not a quality product that will LAST and KitchenAid does not appear to care that the customer waits for needed parts. No parts available so after going back and forth for several weeks they referred it to an exchange for the same model. Used the new one for 3 weeks and it died again. They were able to fix it this time after several weeks of back and forth. It worked another 12 months and died again. This time they replaced all of the insides and still it does not work. They want to replace the insides yet again, but the parts are on backorder for about 4 weeks. They have no problem getting service out to work on it, but they just throw parts at it and cannot seemed to get it repaired. We have now been without our unit for 2 months. When it is operable it is great, but it seems that there are some bugs that need to be worked out. I have read 1 review on their new induction model 509, but it had the same problem. These systems can accommodate electric or gas heat and allow you to customize your setup for the way you cook. Some models come with heating elements and accessories included, while others feature open bays that allow you to select the accessories you want. Covers for the various work surfaces provide a sleek look when the cooktop is not in use.
Look for features that enhance the versatility and safety of your cooktop. Some models offer adjustable burners that can better fit the size of your cookware; others feature simmer or high-heat burners that can help you cook delicate sauces and boil water faster. Still other burner designs make the cooktop easier to clean. Also look for safety features that can help prevent burns, and consider adding accessories that enhance convenience.
Gas cooktops feature open or sealed burners. Open burners reach maximum heat output more quickly, but the pan sits farther from the flame; sealed burners position the pan closer to the flame and make the cooktop easier to clean because they prevent liquid and food debris from getting below the cooktop surface.
Gas cooktops generally feature burners with various heat-output rates, measured in British thermal units (Btus). High-heat burners are ideal for searing, stir-frying, and heating large quantities of food. Low-heat burners are good for simmering delicate sauces.
Continuous cast-iron grates on gas cooktops make it easy to move a pan from one burner to another. Look for durable porcelain-coated cast-iron or stainless-steel grates.
Expandable elements let the cook choose between a small and large burner to match the size of the cookware. Bridge elements connect two standard-size burners to accommodate oversize cookware or a griddle.
To increase safety, some cooktops feature lights that alert you to a burner that is turned on or a surface that is still hot.
Particularly helpful in models with controls on the front, lockout controls help prevent children from turning on the burners.
Optional accessories allow you to expand a cooktop’s standard features and customize it for the way you cook.
As you're shopping, be sure to consider how easy the cooktop is to clean, what type of ventilation you'll need, and the size and finish that will work best in your kitchen.
Opt for a smooth-top electric cooktop to make it easy to wipe up spills, or look for a gas cooktop with sealed burners and dishwasher-safe grates and knobs. Gas cooktops with open burners include drip pans to prevent spills into the inner workings of the cooktop; these usually need to be replaced periodically.
You'll need to place the cooktop under a wall-mount or ceiling-mount ventilation unit, or opt for a cooktop with downdraft ventilation. Downdraft vents are the least effective, but they provide greater flexibility in terms of cooktop placement.
Most cooktops include four or five burners and are either 30 or 36 inches wide. Electric cooktops typically measure 30 inches wide, while gas models are more often 36 inches wide. Look at the burner layout to make sure there's enough space between burners to accommodate multiple pots and pans.
The most common finishes are stainless steel, white, and black. Consider what finish will complement your other appliances and your kitchen decor.
