Billiards & Pool Tables Buying Guide
Billiards and pool tables come in several price categories, depending on whether youíre serious about pool, billiards, or snooker, or just plan to shoot around for fun. Generally all tables comprise the same features, but the quality of the materials varies.
Types of Billiards & Pool Tables
Price is the best way to distinguish pool tables, because tables differ little one from another. There are inexpensive, expensive, and custom tables. Custom tables offer the only significant variation in decorative style. Choices include only a few different traditional leg styles and a handful of felt colors.
A basic table costs $1,000 or less. The table surface will be made of particleboard, and you can set up the table yourself. Basic tables offer good choices for families with children, beginners, or people who will use the table only occasionally. Inexpensive tables can warp in damp environments, such as basements.
For $1,000 to $3,000 you can buy a pool table with a slate table surface, leather pockets, and hardwood legs. Theses professionally installed tables each come with a manufacturerís lifetime warranty.
For $3,000 or more, a pool table features top-of-the-line materials as well as a choice in appearance. You might choose an unusual wood or finish, an intricate design, or a felt top adorned with a personal logo.
When you shop for a pool table, consider the size of the table and cues and the space available in your room. After that, table designs possess few differences.
All pool tables comprise a surface twice as long as it is wide. Most tables for home use are 7 or 8 feet long. Some tables for commercial use are more than 8 feet long. Professional tournament tables are 9 feet long.
Cues can be as short as 48 inches long but never longer than 60 inches. Most cues are 57 inches long, but you may want to offer a variety of pool cue lengths to players.
Because pool cues are about 5 feet long, you need to provide at least 5 feet of clearance around all sides of a pool table. You can use shorter sticks if space is tight.
The table surface of a good pool table is slate. The slate may be one long piece or three separate pieces. Separate pieces make moving and setting up the table easier.
Most pool tables possess drop pockets, or pouches, to collect balls. The pouches may be plastic, vinyl, or leather in either solid or mesh. Commercial tables contain ball return shoots, which collect balls and deliver them to central troughs.
The wood rails and the rubber cushions determine the bounce of a billiard ball off the table sides. The best rails are solid hardwood not particleboard, which can deteriorate with repeated ball knocks.
