Drinkware Buying Guide
Prepare to serve thirsty family and friends with a selection of glasses, cups, and mugs in a range of sizes and shapes. Drinkware comes in a variety of styles, materials, and uses, and many have very specific purposes.
Types of Drinkware
Drinking vessels are as varied as the liquids they can hold. Based on what your guests drink, you may need only basic glasses and mugs or a wider assortment of sizes, styles, and materials. Make sure you have the right glasses for the right drinks for successful entertaining.
Tumblers and smaller glasses are versatile enough for any cold drink, from milk to soda pop to iced tea to plain water. Shapes vary but are usually simple and casual for everyday use.

Serve mixed drinks from the appropriate glasses. Old-fashioned or rocks glasses hold 8-12 ounces and are roomy enough for plenty of ice, while V-bowl martini glasses are meant for cocktails served "up." Highball and Collins glasses have a 10- to 16-ounce capacity.
To keep coffee hot longer, choose a thick cup or mug with a narrow opening. Paper, plastic, and stainless steel can retain flavors and aromas. Glass and ceramic won't do that, but they can break. Standard cups and mugs range from 12 to 20 ounces; other shapes suit the type of coffee, such as latte or demitasse.
The cup is as important as the leaves in the ritual of drinking tea. Classic footed cups of delicate porcelain or bone china usually come with saucers, while flat-bottom cups need none. A white interior showcases the tea's color. Variations include glass infuser mugs and handle-free cast-iron cups that complement Japanese tea.
The shape and size of each type of stemware is designed to present the beverage at its best. Red-wine glasses have a large, wide bowl to capture the wine's aromas. A smaller, narrower glass helps white wine stay cool longer. Sparkling-wine glasses, also known as flutes, are tall and narrow to encourage champagne bubbles to rise. Dessert-wine glasses are small and tapered at the top. The short stem and wide bowl of a brandy snifter helps your palm's heat warm the liquor.

Over the centuries and across world cultures, drinkware has developed to include specialized containers for each beverage as well as types of that beverage -- think of coffee.
You will use drinkware every day; shop for pieces that are attractive as well as functional. Manufacturers introduce new styles, tints, and patterns each season to suit any taste or preference.
In general, cold and hot drinks are served from vessels made of different materials. Glass is most common for cold and iced drinks, but look-alike acrylic is practical for outdoor use. Coffee and tea cups and mugs are usually made from heat-retaining china, stoneware, or other fired-clay products. Quality drinkware of any material has a smooth and consistent finish.
Well-made drinkware feels balanced and comfortable in the hand. Choose styles that are easy to grip and drink from. A glass with a heavier base is less prone to tipping over.
Because there are so many choices in drinkware, it's important to think of your lifestyle and entertaining habits when shopping for items that meet your needs.
Look for glasses, cups, and mugs that hold an appropriate volume of the liquid you're serving. For parties, it's wise to use containers that are slightly too small instead of too big.
Drinkware is available to match dinnerware patterns, but for casual meals, it's fine to use complementary glasses and cups. Clear glass and white ceramic go with almost everything; novelty-pattern drinkware shows your personal style but may look dated quickly.
Choose thicker glass or plastic drinkware for increased durability. Except for fragile, handpainted, or metallic-trim items, your glasses, mugs, and cups should be dishwasher-safe.
Choose a size and shape that provides a safe grip to prevent spills and injury. A child will do better with a small juice glass than a half-full tall glass. Specialty toddler glasses are a safe and practical choice.
Consider how you'll store delicate glassware to avoid breakage. If storage is limited, look for cups and mugs that stack or nest.
Some people like a matching set of cups for tea parties or after-dinner coffee. Others prefer a varied collection that allows each guest or family member to claim his or her favorite.
