Undercabinet Lighting Buying Guide

Undercabinet lighting can be surprisingly easy to install, even for first-time do-it-yourselfers. Here’s how to sort through the various types of undercabinet lighting and choose the right type for your needs.

Types of Undercabinet Lighting

Types of Undercabinet Lighting

All undercabinet lighting casts small amounts of light in fairly directed positions. The glow can be enough to offer specific task lighting—say, in a kitchen—or illumination that accents a particular feature in a room such as an office or laundry space. The type of undercabinet lighting—strip, puck, recessed, or rope—you choose depends on the size of the area you want to light as well as how invasive the installation.

Strip

Strip lights, undercabinet lights that are strung together, have a very low profile and can be installed either during construction or postproject. As with other undercabinet lights, strip undercabinet lights can be directed upward or downward.

Recessed

Recessed undercabinet lighting resembles traditional recessed cans; the lights are mounted so they sit flush with the cabinet. They offer an almost invisible profile but require more involved installation.

Rope

Rope undercabinet lights come strung together in a rope that plugs into an outlet. Some rope undercabinet lighting can be trimmed to desired lengths. Clips can adhere rope lighting below cabinets, or the rope can simply be placed on top of cabinets to send a glow toward the ceiling.

Purchase Considerations

Purchase Considerations

Undercabinet lighting is often selected because it will not draw attention to itself, but rather blend into the background. Because of that, most of the purchasing decisions to take into consideration focus on how invasive the installation will be, as well as the type of light provided. Before you choose undercabinet lighting, review the installation method and electrical source; controls; and light color and source to ensure you’re making the best choice for your home, time, and budget.

Installation/Electrical Source

Undercabinet lighting attaches to a plug-in, operates by battery, or gets wired to a switch. The fixture you choose depends on several factors, including cost (wiring is more expensive), stage of project (battery-operated versions offer a simple upgrade), and the time available for installation.

Controls

Many battery-operated lights operate via touch or a hand switch. Undercabinet lights that plug-in can be hooked to an outlet that operates through a wall-mount switch. Wiring offers the most control options.

Light Color and Source

Many undercabinet lights provide a directed beam, which may or may not be what you need. Evaluate the square footage to be lit as well as the type of light cast by the fixture. In addition, whiter light portrays food as more palatable, so review the package before buying bulbs for your undercabinet fixtures.
