Recessed Lighting Buying Guide

Gone are the days of ho-hum recessed lighting. Today’s fixtures offer interesting color combinations, efficient sources of light, and cool updated colors and materials.

Types of Recessed Lighting

Types of Recessed Lighting

Although recessed lighting may seem straightforward, the types of recessed fixtures available are actually fairly diverse. Your fixture choices depend not just on looks and personal preference, but where the fixtures will be used and the type of project, such as a brand-new room or a revamped space. Analyze your particular needs and then pick the perfect recessed lighting fixtures based on round or square; new construction or remodel; IC(insulation contact)-rated or non-IC housing; flush, standard, or shallow; and dry, damp, or wet location rated.

Round Vs. Square

Recessed lighting fixtures come in two shapes: round or square. With no difference in performance between the two, choose your shape based on design preference in the room you are lighting.

IC-Rated Vs. Non-IC Housing

The type of recessed fixture you choose also depends on whether or not it will come into contact with insulation; those that will contact insulation must be IC(insulation contact)-rated. Recessed lighting fixtures that won’t contact insulation can have non-IC housings.

Purchase Considerations

Purchase Considerations

Several purchase considerations affect not only the look of your recessed lighting fixtures, but also how they work and the quality of light they give off. Evaluate your favorite recessed lighting fixtures for bulb requirements, trim and reflector colors, and how they combine with other fixtures in the room.

Type of Bulb

Recessed lighting fixtures require different types of bulbs—some of which are shaped like a standard bulb and others which may have a flatter, wider light surface. In addition, recessed fixtures are also available as halogen, low-voltage halogen, and LED. The fixture you choose must be outfitted with the right type of bulb to work properly.

Trim and Reflector Colors

The metal pieces of the recessed fixtures now come in a range of trendworthy colors, including metallic and black.

Light Combinations

By themselves, recessed lighting fixtures probably won’t provide enough light for overall, task, and accent illumination. Instead, use recessed fixtures to complement a room’s overall lighting scheme.
