Bissell was founded in 1876 after Anna Bissell shared her carpet cleaning frustrations with her mechanical husband, Melville, who designed a carpet sweeper machine. Bissell now offers sweepers, vacuums, and many other carpet and rug cleaning machines, such as QuickSteamer products, Steam Mop products, the Steam Sponge, and various carpet shampooers.

The Lift-Off Steam Mop with a detachable steam pod cleans hard floors, sinks, grout, tile, and more with controllable steam pressure. The ProHeat Pet deep cleaning system gets rid of deep pet stains using a built-in hot water heater and six rows of DirtLifter power brushes that spray and scrub carpet. The SpotBot cleans unexpected spills and old stains with a hands-free option and a 32-ounce dirt tank capacity. The bagless PowerForce compact vacuum weighs less than 11 pounds and contains a see-through Easy Empty Dirt Cup that makes it easy to see when the cup needs to be emptied.

In 2008, Bissell earned Champion status in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative for its greener and environment-friendly products. The portable Little Green Proheat Deep Reach spot cleaner uses Little Green Formula that received EPA Design of the Environment certification. Bissell offers cleaning solutions for hard floors and tile as well as carpet.
