Selecting Soups for a Menu

When choosing a soup to serve with a meal, consider the rest of your menu.

  • If you main dish is rich and filling, serve a light or clear soup such as a light pureed vegetable soup.
  • If your main dish is light, serve a hearty soup that will enrich your meal, such as a bisque, chowder, or cream soup.
  • Avoid repeating ingredients or flavors in the soup that you serve in other courses.
  • If your menu has many complicated recipes, choose a simple soup.
  • If you plan to serve soup as a main dish, round out your meal with a crisp salad and rolls or crackers.
