The right kitchen equipment in the right place can make cooking a breeze.

Begin with some good basic equipment, and as space and budget permit, add some of the fun gadgets that make cooking easier and faster. Store items that you use less often in out-of-the-way areas and keep the most-used items in convenient spots.

Basic Equipment:

  • Set of nested dry measuring cups and measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowls
  • Wooden spoons
  • Slotted spoon
  • Pancake turner
  • Rubber scrapers
  • Tongs
  • Ladle
  • Sharp knives
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Kitchen scissors
  • Can and bottle openers
  • Wire whisk
  • Rotary beater and/or electric mixer
  • Colander
  • Strainer
  • Pastry brush
  • Grater
  • Cutting board
  • Kitchen scale

For range-top cooking, baking, and broiling:

  • 6- to 8-inch skillet with nonstick surface
  • Large saucepan (for pasta)
  • 1- and 1-1/2-quart saucepans
  • Teakettle
  • Vegetable steamer basket
  • Baking sheet
  • Small casseroles (10 to 24 ounces)
  • 6-ounce custard cups
  • Small loaf pans, pie plate, and tube pan
  • Cooling racks
  • Roasting pan with rack
  • Small broiler pan
