1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and lightly flour two 4- to 4 1/2-cup ovenproof glass or stainless-steel bowls; set aside. Prepare batter for cake mix according to package directions. Divide batter between the prepared bowls. (If you don't have two identical bowls, fill one bowl with half of the batter; bake and repeat.) Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the centers comes out clean. Cool cakes in bowls on wire racks for 10 minutes. Remove cakes from bowls; cool completely on wire racks. Trim flat sides of cakes to make even surfaces.
2. Tint 1 cup of the Creamy White Frosting green and the remaining frosting blue. Using a small amount of blue frosting, sandwich the two cakes together, making a ball shape. Place cake on a serving plate.
3. Spread blue frosting all over cake. Using a small metal spatula or a knife, spread small amounts of green frosting onto cake to form simple continent shapes. Sprinkle top of cake lightly with powdered sugar to resemble the polar ice cap.
1. In a large mixing bowl beat shortening, vanilla, and almond extract with an electric mixer on medium speed for 30 seconds. Gradually add 2 cups of the powdered sugar, beating well. Add 2 tablespoons of the milk. Gradually beat in remaining powdered sugar. Gradually add milk until frosting reaches a spreading consistency. Makes about 3 cups.
