Celery Mary

Makes: 1 servings
Start to Finish 5 mins
Celery Mary
  • 1  lemon
  •  Celery salt
  • 3  cherry tomatoes
  • 1/2  tablespoon  diced fresh green pepper
  • 1/2  tablespoon  diced fresh yellow pepper
  • 1 1/2  ounces  aquavit or vodka
  •  Dash of hot pepper sauce, such as Tabasco
  •  Celery soda (such as Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray Soda) or substitute ginger ale with a pinch of crushed celery seeds
  •  Celery

1. Juice 1 tablespoon of juice from the lemon; set aside juice. Use the juiced lemon to rub the rim of a tall glass; dip rim into a shallow dish of celery salt. Fill the glass with ice.

2. In a sturdy glass or cocktail shaker, use a muddling tool or end of a wooden spoon to crush and stir cherry tomatoes, green and yellow peppers, hot pepper sauce, and reserved lemon juice. Add aquavit and ice; shake well. Strain into prepared glass and top with celery soda. Garnish with a thin slice of celery stalk. Makes 1 cocktail.

From the Test Kitchen*
  • For a nonalcoholic cocktail, omit Aquavit. Add 1/2 cup Cel-Ray® soda to the cocktail shaker with ice. Stir, do not shake, and strain into prepared glass.
  • If you can't find the Cel-Ray® soda, substitute 1/3 cup of chilled ginger ale and 1/8 teaspoon crushed celery seed.
