When an old recipe calls for onions,
like in Onion Soup, try sweet onions
for a change.
- Sweet onions are available from April through August. They generally have thin, light outer skins, a high water content, and a high sugar content. Because they bruise easily and are fragile, they have a fairly short storage life.
During the winter months, some additional sweet varieties, such as Oso Sweet and Rio Sweet, often are imported from South America.
