Seasoning a Skillet

Cast-iron cookware needs to be seasoned to help it avoid rust and corrosion.

Instructions for seasoning should come with the skillet. If no instructions are available, wash and dry the pan throroughly. Brush shortening over the entire surface. Heat in a 350 degree F oven for one hour. Cool completely and wipe out the skillet. Season the skillet before the first use and periodically thereafter (especially after you've cleaned it well).
