Grilling Basics - Kabobs

Backyard grilling can be a family affair.

Making kabobs
Teach kids early how
to be safe around grills
with these fun and tasty kabobs.

Kids relish the thrill of a backyard cookout as much as their parents do. Kids can help created grilled fruit kabobs, building on skills they've already mastered around the campfire in Marshmallow Toasting 101.

Happy Fruit Kabobs

Here are some pointers:

  • Age and size matter. Until a child is at least chest high to the grilling surface, she should focus only on assembling skewers or carrying supplies.
  • Dress for the occasion. Beware of billowy sleeves, errant apron strings, and Batman capes -- anything that might catch on the grill. Instead, kids should wear snug-fitting, long-sleeve T-shirts to protect arms from splatters.
