How to Make Coconut Curls

Looking for a fun way to decorate a cake or garnish a dessert recipe? Toasted fresh coconut curls make a beautiful garnish for cakes, bars, pies, and more. Follow these four steps to finish off your desserts in style with fresh toasted coconut.

Step 1

Place a fresh coconut in a heavy resealable plastic bag. Use a hammer or mallet to crack the coconut in half.

Step 2

Use a spoon to pry coconut meat from the hard outer shell. Discard the shell.

Step 3

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Starting on one side of a large piece of coconut, use a vegetable peeler to peel off large curls of coconut.

Step 4

Bake coconut curls in a single layer on a large baking sheet until curls are very light brown, about 3 to 5 minutes. Cool completely before using.
