Sip of Cheer
When you splurge during the holidays, pick a drink with a joyous flavor and a smidge of nutritional benefits.
Juice-based drinks stirred with citrus-on-a-stick will give you some vitamins. Start with 100 percent apple juice and you'll get a jolt of heart-protecting antioxidants. Add wedges of orange, lemon, or lime for a little infection-fighting vitamin C. The more color, the merrier. Brilliantly colored fruites (and their juices), such as pomegranates, cranberries, oranges, and mangoes, are high in vitamins.
A cup of Christmas tea or a festive tea-based punch also may have health benefits. Two cups of tea contain a level of flavonoids -- plant chemicals that may reduce the risk of heart disease, storke, and stomach cancer -- equal to a serving of vegetables, says Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., a nutrition researcher at Tufts University in Boston.
