Experiment with Her Favorite Colors for Her Cake

When decorating birthday cakes for women, don't be afraid to experiment with color. Ask the birthday girl what her favorite color is, then experiment with different combinations of food coloring. Here, we alternated dark and light pinks for each layer of this pink lemonade cake. If you cover the creatively colored cake with plain white frosting, she'll get a sweet birthday surprise when she cuts the cake!

Use Her Favorite Fruit in Her Cake

An easy and tasteful way to decorate a birthday cake for a special woman is with fruit. Red fruits, such as strawberries or raspberries, and pink accents will give her cake a feminine look. Or be inspired by her favorite fruit to decorate her birthday cake. Here, we arranged fresh strawberries in a circle and surrounded them with pink frosting and vanilla wafer cookies for a frilly cake.

Mimic Her Favorite Flowers for Her Cake

These feminine flower garden cupcakes look like the real thing and are perfect size for daintier appetites.

To make the violet birthday cupcake, place purple frosting in a pastry bag fitted with a large rose tip. Pipe five petals around the edge of the cupcake, then pipe another five in the center, staggering the top petals with the bottom ones. Add a blackberry for the flower center.

To make the daisy birthday cupcake, place white frosting in a pastry bag fitted with a small rose or basket-weave tip. Start at the center of a frosted cupcake and use back and forth motions to make long petals. Yellow candy-coated sunflower seeds make the flower center.

To make the sunflower birthday cupcake,, place yellow frosting in a pastry bag fitted with a leaf tip. Pipe petals around the edge for the first layer, then pipe petals around the center for the second layer, staggering the petals. Chopped miniature semisweet chocolate pieces and toffee pieces make the flower center.

To make sugar cookie leaves, cut cookie dough into leaf shapes and bake. Tint icing green with paste food coloring; spread over cookies and let harden.

Editor's Tip: Adapt the floral idea for a small birthday cake -- just make sure you make more frosting!

Write her favorite quote: Use homemade frosting or a tube of gel icing to write a special quote on her cake. If you're writing with homemade frosting, seal it in a plastic bag and snip one of the corners with scissors so you can easily pipe it onto the cake.

Add a memorable photo: Sometimes pictures speak louder than words, so add a memorable photograph of her with family or friends to make her birthday cake a personalized masterpiece. Most bakeries will print a photo directly onto the cake. Then you can add your own icing decorations, such as a photo frame made of frosting or funny hats on the people in the photo.
