Do-Ahead Timeline

This timeline shows you how far in advance food preparation for the menu can take place. Following these tips allows maximum time with your guests and minimum fuss.


Up to 1 month before
  • Prepare pie dough. Shape into disk, wrap well, and freeze.

Up to 2 days before dinner
  • Thaw pie dough in refrigerator.

Up to 1 day before dinner
  • Bake empty piecrust as directed in recipe; cool.
  • Prepare Strawberry Chiffon Pie. Cover and refrigerate.
  • Prepare duck through step 1.
  • Prepare all ingredients for soup, but do not cook. Cover and refrigerate.
  • Prepare all ingredients for Asparagus Snow Pea Stir-Fry, but do not cook. Cover and refrigerate.
  • Prepare all ingredients for Broccoli and Peppers with Walnuts, but do not cook. Cover and refrigerate.

Up to 6 hours before dinner
  • Prepare Fried Rice and set aside.

2 hours before dinner
  • Cook duck in skillet as directed in recipe. Prepare the rest of the duck recipe, including glaze.

1 hour before dinner
  • Cook soup and keep warm.

40 minutes before dinner
  • Stir fry Broccoli and Peppers with Walnuts.

30 minutes before dinner
  • Roast duck in 425-degree oven for 15-20 minutes until thermometer registers 160 degrees F.
  • Cook stir-fry on stovetop.
  • Reheat Fried Rice in microwave at 50 percent power until hot.
